Will KC and Marshall save the President?,
By Raj "raj_thatsme" (USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Capital Mysteries #1: Who Cloned the President? (A Stepping Stone Book(TM)) (Paperback)
Synopsis: The book starts off with KC Corcoran and Marshall Li picking the name of a Present from their teacher Mr. Alubicki's baseball cap. KC gets President Thornton and Marshall gets Herbert Hoover. They have to write a report on the name of the President they get. KC goes home and does more research on President Thornton, like how he is left handed and got a lot of merit badges as a boy scout, as well as the newspaper article on how he says he is not into human cloning. When she sees a news report on the President on TV, she thinks it's strange that the President is signing papers with his right hand. She realizes that someone must have cloned the President, and calls Marshall to come over.
KC and Marshall decide to go to the White House to solve the mystery. At the White House, KC and Marshall join the tour group and manage to create a commotion by opening Marshall's jar of spiders. After hiding in the Lincoln bedroom till night, they start searching for the real President. When they meet the President and his clone, they cannot tell apart the real one from the fake, and soon find themselves kidnapped by the scientists who cloned the President. Will they be able to escape, and succeed in their efforts to rescue the real President? Review: I really enjoyed reading some of the A to Z mysteries by Ron Roy, so I decided to pick up book 1 from Capital Mysteries and see how it would be. I thought this book was exciting at times, but overall I felt that it was a really strange story to read, where some parts were unexplained, which made it confusing to read at times. For instance, why was the cloned President locked in the room and drugged? And what did they do to the clone in the end? Also, I know this is an adventure book, but I felt that KC and Marshall just leaving the house and going to the White House themselves, without notifying anyone like their mother, was a not well written, as young children reading this might think that it is okay to just leave the house and follow their instincts. However, there were some parts of the book that I found interesting, like when KC tests President Thornton to see if he is the genuine one, or how they escape from the White House. The illustrations provided by Liza Woodruff add well to the book, and I thought the ones where KC unleashes the spiders in the White House, and when they meet the real President Thornton, were very nicely drawn. Overall, I thought this was an exciting book to read, but too unbelievable to take it seriously, and felt that it could have been better if the story was more real, and somewhat a little simpler.

Prior to trip to DC saw these books & ordered from Amazon. Arrived in plenty of time. Even though my daughter is above this reading level, she still enjoyed them thoroughly! Great little reads to inspire interest on a DC trip. I'd guess these are about a 2-4 grade level book, but my kid is in Grade 6 and still enjoys the stories.
