Grade 9 Up-Netzley opens with a discussion of the shared traits and beliefs of presidential assassins, their likely motivations, the differences between American and foreign assassins, and the origin of the Secret Service. She then goes on to profile six individuals who either killed or attempted to kill a U.S. president. Well-placed, black-and-white photographs and illustrations supplement the text and numerous footnoted quotations from primary and secondary sources enliven the author's clear prose. The book is well organized overall, although the table of contents is flawed because it does not state the name of the person covered in each chapter. Useful for large history or true-crime collections.
