4.0 out of 5 stars Electoral Crisis Before 2000?, February 13, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Presidential Lottery: The Reckless Gamble in Our Electoral System (Hardcover)
If I remember correctly, Michener got to be an elector for Nixon maybe? Carter? Not sure. Anyway, he became intimately aware of the potential for diabolical mischief in the Electoral College and wrote this as kind of an expose and a warning. It was fascinating at the time. Post-Florida few of us would be surprised. If more had read it before, though, maybe Florida wouldn't have happened!

4.0 out of 5 stars Interesting, but slightly off target, July 3, 2006

Michener was an elector for Humphrey in 1968, and came face to face with the bad features of our electoral system. But He ended up making a proposal that keeps a lot of its defects, only because he focused on the things that could have gone wrong in 1968. His preferred solution, the automatic electoral vote, would not have made the slightest difference if it had been in place in 2000, for example.

We need a reform of our Presidential election system. With that I agree. But Michener's preferred solution is not the one we need.
