Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Thanks to the Reagan administration, astrology as a behind-the-scenes force in the White House isn't a new idea. In 2006, a president is once again petitioning the stars for help. Addie Pryce, "one of the top astrologers in Washington," is selected for the top-secret task of advising the president and undermining his detractors. Though she's less than thrilled by the idea, Addie agrees and is pulled into the dangerous swirl of the Washington political scene, where she's introduced to an intimidating cast of power-hungry characters and forced to work with skeptics like White House staffer Jonah Stern. When she discovers the bloody body of her only true friend and confidante, retired astrologer Livonia Matthews, Addie painfully recognizes the ruthlessness of the world she has entered. While the press rakes up rumors of the president's paranormal dealings, Addie is kidnapped by evil Senator Granit, who's managed to get an android elected vice-president and has another 'droid waiting in the wings to murder the president. Thanks to even more implausible narrative twists, the good guys reach the inevitable happy ending. While this romantic thriller moves quickly, the awkward plot, its unconvincing characters and the author's weak grasp of technological and political logistics make this futuristic vision largely ineffectual.

5.0 out of 5 stars Are we having fun yet? You bet!!!!!, August 10, 2000
This review is from: President's Astrologer (Paperback)
This book is a blast. I truly enjoyed it from cover to cover. As an Astrologer living in Santa Fe, I really got a kick out of all the locations that were used here in the Southwest...And all the astrological jargon was fun for me too. I think she did a great job and here's hoping she will write another. Kudos to you, Barbara

5.0 out of 5 stars A WELL WRITTEN, EXCITING ,SUSPENSEFUL MYSTERY, July 8, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: President's Astrologer (Paperback)
"The President's Astrologer" is a perfect summer read, although I'd recommend it for any season. It has all the ingredients that make a book hard to put down: an exciting, suspensful plot, appealing characters who make you care about them, and easy to understand information about a fascinating subject, in this case, astrology. I was sorry when it ended. My hat is off to the author. Her command of dialogue constantly made me feel that this book would make an excellent film or mini series.

5.0 out of 5 stars Politics, Suspense, Intrigue...What more could you want?, August 16, 1999
This review is from: President's Astrologer (Paperback)
This novel successfully crosses genres, and is filled with drama, mystery, romance & intrigue. The science fictional elements come into play only late in the story yet are integral in making all the various story lines come together. The use of astrology throughout the book is represented in terms and language that are completely accessible to the layman, yet are done with the thoroughness of one who is an expert in the field. The debate between science versus astrology is approached through the protagonist's personal relationship as well as her credibility to the public at large. And Barbara Shafferman is likely to expand a few minds along the way. This is a "must read" for all and is a fine first novel for the author. Highly Recommended.
