Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 6-9-These books form an attractive, lavishly illustrated overview of both the men who have served as presidents and the evolution of the office itself. Each one opens with an introduction that describes the issues of the era and a detailed timeline that contains specific events in both the country and in the presidency. The space devoted to each man varies according to the importance of the administration, with individuals such as Washington, Lincoln, and Franklin Roosevelt receiving extensive coverage of up to half a book. Others who have had less historical impact receive just a few pages. The actual text, a single column that appears only on the left-side pages, is standard material found in most books about the presidents. The accompanying illustrations, however, are far better than those found elsewhere. Photos, period art, portraits, engravings, and cartoons, in both black and white and full color, form a visual history of the office and the people who have held it. The captions are quite detailed, and are just as informative as the text. These books are more appealing and will provide better access for students than the more traditional one-volume surveys such as Wyatt Blassingame's The Look-It-Up Book of the President (McKay, 1990) and Charles Beard and Detlev Vagts's The Presidents in American History (Messner, 1989).
