Wish it was bus powered but it never claimed to have it so I can't fault it for that.

This means you can't mix mic types, either condensers or not.

I saw the other review here and felt compelled to write my own. I've only had my unit for a week, but it was more or less plug and play for me. I have a 3-year old iMac with 4GB of RAM running OS 10.6.8 (not Lion). The one piece of advice I'd offer is to not even open the software CD that comes with the unit; instead, go directly to the Presonus site and download the latest drivers there. They do updates frequently, so this way you're sure to get the most current software. (Also, some retailers, like Musician's Friend -- whom I highly recommend, btw -- will not allow you to return the unit if you've opened the software.)

For me, setup took about 10 minutes, and then I was recording. I will probably end up using the included Studio One software (with rebate for free upgrade to "Producer" series until 12/31/11), but for now I'm recording in Reaper, which found and easily integrated with the 44VSL.

In short, this unit is an absolute pleasure to use. The controls are intuitive and the sound is great. I've been recording with a "stand-alone" Tascam digital recorder (2488MKII) for years and am relatively new to computer-based recording. This unit has made the transition really easy, and I'm wondering now why I waited so long to do it. Absolutely zero-latency monitoring makes a huge difference. Technically, I know it's not "zero," but it might as well be because there's no audible latency at all, even with effects applied to incoming signals.

One other thing: if you do need help/advice, the Presonus forums are amazing. So many knowledgeable people there (including at least one Presonus employee) -- it's a great resource.

Final word: I like this unit so much, and think it's such good value, that I'm actually returning it and getting its big brother, the 1818VSL.

I don't know why others have had so many issues with this system. I'm new to recording and I had a great 4 input recording session going on my drum kit in less than 30 minutes. I was blown away with the quality of the sound and I'm not using expensive microphones. I installed the Studio One Artist s/w on my macbook and the rest fell into place. Maybe all of the complaints are based around lower end Windows PCs. People don't realize there are requirements that need to be met and you need a good running computer. I like having a nice compact system that gets the job done. I still haven't recorded guitars, bass, keyboards, but if I can get a great drum sound right away, I'm sure other instruments will sound just as good if not better. I will post updates.

I've been using this unit for about two years to do instrument and vocal recordings and am a complete novice to computer recording. A sound engineer recommended this unit to me, as he had two of them and felt that Presonus makes a good product. I was up and running with Garage Band and the Studio One software that was boxed with the unit in no time. I also have used it with Logic and have not had any problems. It literally is plug and play recording.

As some have noted, don't even install the CD of Studio One that comes with the unit -- go to the website and download the updated version. There is also a free upgrade to their version 2 edition. Lots of extras, and this software is a pleasure to use. I prefer it over Garage Band.

I like the portability of this audio interface - I can shove it in my laptop accessory bag and run with it. If I want to do interviews for a documentary project and run multiple microphones, this unit allows me to do that. It isn't USB powered, so a power source is required. I've also used it with my iPad with the usb adapter for the iPad. Again, no problems and the ability to access any number of apps that allow both playing with effects and for recording.

I can't add much more to this review than what's already been noted on the positive side by many reviewers here, but I can add to the chorus of happy Presonus users and report my own findings and experiences with the unit. I have no complaints and only positive remarks because that's been my experience with the unit and the software. I hope this helps anyone who is considering purchasing a usb interface for recording.

I can agree that this is gonna suck for those who have no knowledge in sound or electronics. If you can't set your output up then your really gonna hate it. I'm only using it for recording so I can't really say much about using for live sound. I play mostly alone and never use the vsl until I'm ready to mix or master a song so I dont worry about the lag in the recording. I record with acoustic instruments and have 2 AKG condenser mics 120 and 170. These mics are the cheap ones and I think there great. The vsl program gives more mixing options than a standard multitrack recorder. I did have the tascam DP-03 it was nice but auto-punch system was terrible, Look it up, dont buy it. The audiobox is great for guys getting started with computer recording, Also a good system that dosent take much space. I'm happy. I know the headphone problem sucks. Deal with it or fix it.
