Remarkable collection of sports writing. Smith doesn't claim, as some do, that the writing on the Sports page is the best in journalism, not does he favor another cliche - that only sportswriters can write good sports stories.Case in point: a beautiful story for the New Yorker penned by John Updike, who never wrote about baseball again. Remarkable insight into Ted Williams and his last game at Fenway Park. A recent Ivy League grad, Updike hit it on the button like a sharp line drive. A fun read. Easy to pick up and then put down for later. |
