About the Author

LARRY M. TOBIN, born and raised in Kansas City, Mo., decided writing was in his future when, as a high school freshman, his English teacher questioned the originality of a short story assignment. Ultimately convinced that Larry did, indeed, write the story himself, she gave him an A and told him to do a lot with his talent.

Upon high school graduation in 1964, Larry headed to Marquette University in Milwaukee, Wis., to study journalism. He soon decided that wasn't the kind of writing he had in mind and switched majors to history and political science. Career moves led him into politics and public relations where, in 1973, he met Kathy Branen at a Wisconsin Newspaper Association convention. They were married a year and a half later.

Larry soon went to work for the newspaper association until he and Kathy purchased their own publication and spent the next 28 years putting out a newspaper every week. Larry sold advertising and ran the business, along with writing a weekly column and an occasional editorial, while Kathy served as editor. Still, the urge to write fiction never left him and Larry now devotes much of his time to developing a stockpile of stories based on his many experiences.

Larry and Kathy have two adult children, a son, Kerry, and daughter, Kelly. The Tobins now divide their time between their home in Wisconsin's Northwoods and their log cabin nestled in the mountains of Montana. Larry can be contacted via his website at larrymtobin.com.

From the moment you read about the three crosses by the side of the road you are hooked. Who? What? Why? I wanted to find out. The book is easy to read. I could picture myself in this small town. The characters had personalities that were real to me. There were layers of mystery which added surprise throughout the book rather than just a big ending. It is a very timely book. As newspapers around the country close or cut back, this book reminds us how important they are to our communities. We need reports that will dig into stories and report them to us regardless of the personal sacrifices necessary. Not all newsmen may be like that but Preston Williams is. After reading Pressing Matters I went out and bought more copies to share with my family and friends.

Larry Tobin has mastered the art of building suspense with a unique approach. He builds reader anticipation as he goes, solving one problem and beginning immediately with a new mini-mystery. "Pressing Matters" also has a great central theme--that newspapers are vital to our society as watchdogs on government at all levels. This is good read with a strong message.

Format: Perfect Paperback
"Pressing Matters" is a tale of small town that is Mayberry on the outside and evil on the inside. It is an excellent read that keeps you turning the pages as you delve into the workings of a small town newspaper and the tragedy that results when the publisher chooses to reveal the truth about some prominent city officials.
