Not Gospel But Great Doyle Lawson Music,
This review is from: Pressing On Regardless (Audio CD)
Normally Doyle Lawson releases some of the best BG gospel music but on this venture,he has stayed in the traditional BG vien with no gospel cuts.DLQ gets going right from the first cut "Trouble Keeps Hanging 'Round My Door". "Smiling" Jim Mills on the banjo really picks great thru-out this peppy song. Lead vocals change to guitarist John Bowman on "I Will Grow In Love With You". This song is reminiscent of Doyle's love songs CD "My Heart Is Yours".Pleasant love song done in the usual tasteful Doyle Lawson style. "I'm So Blue I Could Cry" adds guest fiddler Jimmy "Can Do" Edmonds on this BG song sung perfectly by the band.Doyle really slows it down on "Love Me Right To The End". The harmonizing chorus really makes this a nice number. My favorite on this CD is "Write Me Swetheart". John Bowman on lead vocals really belts it out on this Roy Acuff song which is just a great song.(Sounds like Jim Mills on the banjo likes it too!)"Ship Of Love" has the neatest words and is also a nice BG number. "Can Do" Edmonds on fiddle and "Smiling" Jim Mills on banjo do some great work here. John Bowman again does a fine job on lead vocals on "Let Me Borrow Your Heart".This peppy Roy Acuff song is again another BG song with "Smiling" Jim Mills on banjo having a good time. Doyle slows it down again on "For Love's Sake" but it picks back up on "I Can't Stop Me From Loving You". Mighty fine BG here with Bowman singing lead and taking a guitar solo. The great singing and playing continue on "It's Raining,It's Pouring". Not a fast BG number but another Doyle Lawson stamp of BG approval. "I'm Really Gone" slows the pace down with some trademark DLQ harmonies before the last cut "Tennessee Banjo Man" which was a staple for a DLQ show for a while. It is a great and happy song which DLQ had a lot of fun with while they were playing.Needles to say but banjo player "Smiling" Jim Mills, really picks away on this hit.
If you like BG,this is it.If you are not sure about BG,try this out.It has some good variety and is being performed by one of the greats with his hand picked band.
