We're sending it back and buying the newer version.

I would love the game if the colors were more vivid and distinguishable and if it's truly retro - make it wooden, instead of plastic.

The storage tray along the side isn't large enough to hold all the pegs, so you can't close the cover for actual storage.

I loved this game as a child and bought it for my kids. Gave it a 4-5 star for educational and fun but kept defaulting to a 1-2 star. The disappointing part of the pressman game is the colors. The orange is more of a dark yellow. What happened to good ole primary colors? The makers use beige and teal and the green cover for the "code" shades the colored pegs even more, making it difficult to distinguish your "code" colors. I would love the game if the colors were more vivid and distinguishable and if it's truly retro - make it wooden, instead of plastic.

Having played this as a kid, got it for my kids. Amazed that they would change the colors so dramatically that they're almost impossible to differentiate. That really affects the ability to use the game. Right of the box, you notice the old colors are gone and three of them replaced with teal, beige, and orange are virtually indistinguishable. Very disappointing. Not sure why anyone would do that. Cannot recommend buying this model at all. Maybe try the old original version if you can get it.

I was looking for a somewhat portable version of Mastermind. After reading the reviews of the other versions I went with this one. Pegs stay in as long as you are not knocking it around. My two biggest complaints are that the yellow and orange pegs are very close in color and hard to tell the difference in certain lighting situations. The second is that not all the pegs fit in the side storage section. I'm thinking that maybe they just give you extra and you can keep the ones that don't fit in the cardboard box.

For what it is, this is a fine version of this game. Two problems, both with the pegs.

Firstly, the side slot meant for storing all the pegs is not large enough to accommodate all the pegs provided.

Second, there are two shades of yellow. The pegs are all weird Easter-y pastel colors. Would have preferred red, green, blue, yellow, et cetera.

Mastermind is a great game and I was really looking forward to playing this game with my six-year-old grandson. I was particularly excited about the retro version, which sounded kind of cool. Unfortunately, of the six colors included in this set, three are virtually indistinguishable from one another -- yellow, orange, and beige -- and two are very close -- blue and green. It's ridiculous. Very hard for a child, not to mention an adult. We're sending it back and buying the newer version.

I spent hundreds of hours playing this code-breaking game as a kid, and the concept is still terrific. However, this cheap "made in China" version doesn't stand up to use. The pegs are supposed to be 6 colors. This set comes with pastel shades that are hard to tell apart, especially "yellow" and "less yellow". Primary colors would be so much better. The scoring pegs don't fully fit into the scoring holes. The brown plastic board is larger than it needs to be, and the code hood can't be flipped to reveal the secret code to player #2 (he has to peek underneath from a low viewing angle). The storage tray along the side isn't large enough to hold all the pegs, so you can't close the cover for actual storage. The dividers in the storage tray don't actually keep the tiny scoring pegs and the larger code pegs separated. Very disappointed in overall quality and usability. Unfortunately, it looks as if this is your only manufacturer choice from amazon.

First, the good. My twelve year old daughter and I love to play this game together. It took her only a couple of games to catch on.

Now the bad, just like most other reviewers mentioned, the colors are terrible. What would have been so hard about primary colors, or even secondary? But teal and beige?

Also as mentioned, you can't really store all the pegs in the "storage tray" because they don't fit very well. I doubt they'd stay in the right place, anyway. We use Ziploc bags for the pieces.

Lastly, the tolerance for the small peg and hole diameters is sloppy. They've mostly worked in after a few hours, but it just isn't the quality of the old version. I had the Invicta version when I was a kid. If you can get your hands on that one, you'll be much more satisfied. It had more solid pegs, the colors were white, black, red, green, yellow, and blue. That said, this one is still playable, just not as enjoyable.

I remembered this game from my childhood and thought it would be fun for my kids (I was right.... they love it!) The 3-star rating is because of the colors of the pieces. They are pastel, rather than bold colors. It is hard to tell the pale yellow apart from the beige. I am probably going to paint the top of one of those colors so they can be differentiated.
