5.0 out of 5 stars Great Fun and Excellent Educational Value
Travel Mastermind is like original Mastermind, but it is smaller and has a better format for storage because it has a lid which snaps shut to keep the pegs from getting lost. It still only rates a 4 for durability because of all the small pegs--keep them away from the wee ones because the pegs are definitely a choking hazard. I prefer this to the original Mastermind...

3.0 out of 5 stars big fingers + tiny pins = problem
The game itself is quite fun and entertaining, but the form factor of the design needs improvement. I got the game to entertain my 8-yr old during a cross-country road trip. She learned the game quickly and enjoyed figuring out the strategy.

But this travel version has a few problems. The biggest problem is the <<tiny>> round-headed colored pins...

I prefer this to the original Mastermind because it is smaller and has the snapping lid. Beware if you take it on vacation--look under the beds and couch before you depart to catch all the stray pieces.

This travel format is a great investment for an elementary school classroom to be played during "free" time or on rainy days.

If you like Mastermind, try Advanced Mastermind which has more colors of pegs to be more challenging.

My daughter, age 7, learned Mastermind on vacation last summer and mastered the game. For Christmas she received Advanced Mastermind and has been playing steadily with her father. I have seen great improvements in her logical thinking skills both as she plays the game and in real life situations. We often have games that start on one day and continue the next.

The game itself is quite fun and entertaining, but the form factor of the design needs improvement. I got the game to entertain my 8-yr old during a cross-country road trip. She learned the game quickly and enjoyed figuring out the strategy.

But this travel version has a few problems. The biggest problem is the <<tiny>> round-headed colored pins that tend to easily scatter around the car and are very difficult to grasp. I've got fairly large hands and fingers, so I wasn't surprised that I had problems, but my 3rd grader also had problems picking up the pins. The most difficult part is placing and extracting the 4 code pins from the end of the board - the clearances are very tight. The codebreaker pins are also difficult to place into the holes.

Generally this is a very fun game, but you may want to take look at the larger version for car trips.

1.0 out of 5 stars Just get the original. The travel version is lame!, July 14, 2010

We have the old-school original version of this game and the whole family loves it. We got this travel version to take on a road trip, played it one time, and now plan to return it. The "easy grip" pegs are almost impossible to handle--they slip out of large (grown up) and small (kid) fingers, and fall out of the holes. As you're putting one peg in, it's all-too easy to bump the other pegs and knock them out. The colors are different than the original, which might be fine, except the "key pegs" are red & white (not black & white as in the original), and the blue and green code-making pegs are almost the exact same color. Besides all this, the travel version is not that much smaller than the original, so just get that one instead.

I purchased this game for my teenage daughters because we liked the game. This version is EXTREMELY small, it is difficult to hold and put the pegs in the proper place. If I had known the actual size I would have gotten the larger version. Even too small for travel.

I have always liked Master Mind, and my grandchildren and i like to play it. But the travel size is really too narrow. It is hard to put pegs in holes so it is not as much fun as the regular size game to play.

I bought this game to take backpacking for my husband and I and I was very happy when it arrived at how light this thing is! We have fun playing it and it is VERY small and lightweight which is great!

Mastermind is a great game. Older versions of the smaller boards were much better designed than this "new and improved" version. Doing it again I would opt for a regular size board.
