Image of Clarence "Gatemouth" Brown

Brown started crossing boundaries -- both musical and geographical -- at a very young age. He was born in 1924 in Vinton, Louisiana and raised in Orange, Texas. He learned guitar and fiddle from his father, a strong multi-instrumentalist who taught his son to play Texas fiddle music, traditional French tunes and even polkas. Gate began his professional career at the age of 21 as a drummer in ... Read more in Amazon's Clarence "Gatemouth" Brown Store

Editorial Reviews

Product Description

Taken from several 1970s sessions in France, Pressure Cooker has a relaxed feel that belies its name, a loose vibe that's never sloppy, combining the best of blues and swing. While not as tightly wound as some of Clarence "Gatemouth" Brown's classic recordings--The Original Peacock Recordings and Texas Swing, for example--Pressure Cooker has its own strengths. "She Winked Her Eye" has some especially strong guitar work, and a hilarious monologue in the middle as a bonus, while the slow tempos of "My Time Is Expensive" and "Deep, Deep Water" allow Gate to stretch out (the latter also includes an excellent Jay McShann piano solo). Add to that the humorous touches on "Ain't Nobody Here But Us Chickens" and the thoroughly un-politically correct "Ain't That Just Like a Woman," and what you have is a strong CD that makes up in entertainment what it lacks in intensity. --Genevieve Williams

This is one hell of a CD! This is my favorite Gatemouth CD. I just got a tab book for the guitar of this album and there no way he can play that fast. Anyway this is a great jazzy (swing) bluesy record and is a lot clearer and simpler than the peacock recordings.

An example of a talented journeyman musician with an overload of soul earned the hard way. Your collection of blues is not complete without Gatemouth.
