Book Description

America's Bonhoeffer moment is here.

There is a difference between real faith in God and mere religion. There is a kind of religion that is lifeless and is the bitter enemy of true faith. Think of Dietrich Bonhoeffer’s prophetic attempts to waken the sleeping German church, often unwitting allies of Hitler and the Third Reich. Or of William Wilberforce’s heroic efforts to rouse his complacent “Christian” countrymen to stand against the monstrous evil of the slave trade. Bonhoeffer and Wilberforce stood against the evil of their times—an evil often repackaged in religious-sounding language.

Eric Metaxas’s electrifying message—delivered before the president and dozens of national leaders at the Sixtieth Annual National Prayer Breakfast—calls readers to follow in the steps of Wilberforce and Bonhoeffer, men who lived their faith and swam against the mainstream, instead of drifting along with it. Metaxas makes it clear that phony religiosity offends God himself—and that real prayer is only possible with a living faith in a living God. And that kind of faith can transform the world. No pressure.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Message and Terrific Sense of Humor May 28, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
The best biography I have read in a many years is Metaxas's Bonhoeffer. Once I learned he was releasing a Kindle book about his speech at the National prayer breakfast, I was anxious to read it. Metaxas's sense of humor comes through this short book from the very beginning, keeping you smiling as you feel his enthusiasm and excitement around his preparations to speak before the President and some 4,000 dignitaries.

I appreciated his transparency as he shared about his challenges preparing his speech and the last minute changes he felt compelled to make. You could feel the drama and anticipation as the day approached and the sense of purpose he felt for such a great honor and privilege.

The book also communicates his speech which was as enjoyable as watching the event on video. The Kindle book provides a link to the actual speech at the end of the book. Watching the video had a greater impact after reading about all the events and preparations that led up to the speech.

The focus of the book and the speech is the call for authentic faith centered on the person of Jesus. The phony and dead religion that often plagues Christianity is dismissed for the real thing found in the lives of committed believers in Jesus Christ. Metaxas's former biographies of William Wilberforce and Dietrich Bonhoeffer are two examples he shares of men who followed Jesus and their lives were celebrated because the stood up and made a difference.

I recommend this book and then watching the video of his speech. You will enjoy Metaxas's humor and his heart-felt challenge to follow Christ and stand up to make a difference! The behind the scenes stories of his interaction with the President and Vice President were also very enjoyable.

4.0 out of 5 stars A fun read! May 29, 2012

I guess I bought this book not knowing that the contents was primarily about the National Prayer Breakfast and that great speech Eric had made. I was glad to have read it. I'm somewhat of an apolitical sort and, somewhat cognitively challenged as I had missed many of the inside jokes... I'm still laughing about the Nancy Pelosi birthday shtick. I honestly haven't read much of late that would elicit sudden bursts of laughter until I read this. At the same time, it was good for me to hear once again, amongst the chuckles, the call of Jesus, and to consider the impact that has on myself and those around me. Thanks Eric!

Mr. Metaxas is bold in his telling of our need to take things into account and live accordingly -- he even puts our President's feet to the fire. Worth the read for its content, but its prose is a pleasure.
