Editorial Reviews

2011 album from the Blues-infused California rockers. Fronted by Jay Buchanan, Rival Sons have been heralded as a modern day mix of the Small Faces, The Who, Led Zeppelin and The Kinks. They've already supported AC/DC and Kid Rock in the U.S. and look set to be headlining superstars before the year is out.

I will definitely be checking out their other albums.

Stands up well against other similarly 60's 70's inspired rock bands like Fleet Foxes.

Can't wait for them to come to town on their next tour!

Pressure & Time is the second album from Los Angeles-base rock band Rival Sons, who have burst on the scene in a big way with their decidedly old school, blues-based rock n' roll sound. Hailed by many as the second coming of everyone from Cream to Free to Led Zeppelin, Rival Sons had a lot to live up to with this, their debut album for Earache.

Album opener "All Over the Road" hits like a freight train, and is enough to at least plant the seed that this band may in fact be worthy of the hype. By the time the "so Zeppelin it hurts" title track rolls around you'll be a believer. Pressure & Time is the kind of album you'd expect to hear from a side project of seasoned veterans. It's no surprise that Black Country Communion is a typical comparison. Singer/songwriter Jay Buchanan has a soulful, raspy wail that sounds like Robert Plant covering Paul Rodgers, and it's the perfect complement to the heavy, fuzzy, and always bluesy guitar tone. "Burn Down Los Angeles," "Gypsy Heart" and "Get Mine" are all highlights, but the whole album rocks in a most vintage kind of way.

If you still own albums on vinyl and read Classic Rock Magazine on a regular basis, you'll probably love Pressure & Time. Rival Sons play rock & roll like it hasn't been played in years and they do it in a non-gimmicky way. If it's been too long since you've heard a good old-fashioned rock n' roll album, you owe it to yourself to check this one out.

Boy I hate to use the term retro. It's not really applicable here. While listening to this disc a couple of times I can see where people would want to make comparisons to Led Zeppelin etc... That's all well and good. I will say that these guys sell it well. It will be hard for them to clear the hurdle set by those great 60's and 70's bands for sure. That said, I have a soft spot for bands that play as well as these guys can without the Pro Tools gimmicks. Raw, in your face rock and roll.

Rival Sons sounds like a cross between Led Zeppelin, Free, Black Crowes and Kings Of Leon. The singer can really yell. Just great 70's-style funky soul-rock. Turn it up loud and get lost in their sound.

When you've got a Great, Big, Bug-a-lugs John Bonham drum sound & style AND you've got a singer that looks like a young Jim Morrison & sounds like 'Plant meets Rodgers' AND Groovy Riffage & melodic hooks in all the right places...it's Gotta be good right?? Well AWESOMELY Good is what it is. Besides the obvious nurturing these boys have had growin' up being spoonfed Classic-Rock, you can hear Janis & Big Brother & the Holding Co. would be Rasing a Glass to these guys as well. Another bonus is they've captured the early 70s productoin feel-(but with More sonnics obviously) Ahhh the Glory Days, when Bands were stripped back to Just Raw, Bleeding Passion!!! Bands like these are Flyin' the Flag & Keepin' the Faith in this age of "computerised machine noise"

This is the first band from today's era that I really think sounds like a good classic rock band. You can find lots of people saying some other bands are obviously influenced by Zeppelin, but until I listened to these guys, I never heard it. And not that these guys sound like any other band in particular. They have their own sound, but there's an energy there that I experienced that was similar to being a kid and hearing Zep, Hendrix, Sabbath and all the great bands for the first time.

I'm really happy I finally heard of this band and I hope they stick around for awhile.

I recently saw this band open up for Evanescence. Took a few songs but I started to get into them. Definitely recommend seeing them and the cd.

This band will be what saves rock n roll from extinction. Love the vibe that comes from the music they make together.
