5.0 out of 5 stars Best Miles, February 6, 2006
This review is from: Prestige Profiles 1 (Bonus CD) (Audio CD)
Prestige has the wonderful idea to release compilatory albums of the more standout artists they have signed. Ten volumes with the most prestigious musicians. The selection could've not been better, a list that includes Coltrane, Dolphy, Hawkins and, of course, the great Davis.

The track selection in this first volume nclude some of the finest moments in Mile's career: Dizzy Gillespie's "A night in Tunisia", Sonny Rollins' "Airegin", and the beautiful close theme When the lights are out (a tune that was used by Miles to close some performances)

The sound quality, packaging and graphic design make this CD a perfect introduction to Mile's work. Include a bonus extra disc with tunes from other artists that recorded with Prestige.

If you're searching for more Miles Davis music, I would also recommend this titles:
(1) Kind of blue
(2) The complete birth of the cool
(3) Cookin' with the Miles Davis Quintet

5.0 out of 5 stars An Excellent Re-Release, April 12, 2007
This review is from: Prestige Profiles 1 (Bonus CD) (Audio CD)
This CD, like the rest in the Prestige Profiles series is a re-relase of another CD that had been previously published. It was (I think) remastered, given new packaging, a new name, and a bonus CD to boot. Not owning the original release of any of these ten CDs in this series, that wasn't an issue for me.

I'm what most would consider an anomaly when it comes to jazz. There aren't many in their mid-twenties who avidly listen to jazz. I've been in love with it since high school, so I know a little bit about it.

The songs on the album are Miles at his best on the Prestige label. Some of you might be asking where some of his better-known songs are, but you're not going to find them here because a lot of his more popular work was published on other labels. What you are going to find in this CD is some of the best music from the cool/bebop era of jazz. Prestige did very well when choosing what tracks to place on this CD.

The bonus CD is equally excellent. It's definitely worth the purchase, if you already own a copy of the reissue. You get a compilation of some good-quality music from some pretty big names in jazz. Also, this helps complete the set of tracks that you may be missing from other discs in the series.

Overall, I'd say purchase the series. I started out with Vol. 9, John Coltrane, and picked up volumes 1-4 about a month ago and recently completed the set purchasing 5-8 and 10. It's a great way to kick back, enjoy a drink, and just let the cool fly.

5.0 out of 5 stars Identical to the Prestige release 'Best of Miles Davis'..., May 24, 2008
This review is from: Prestige Profiles 1 (Bonus CD) (Audio CD)
...but still a great set to own if you are a Miles fan. His Prestige sides from the early '50s have always been some of my favorites, but this has all of the Prestige favorites in one place.

Miles does a superb cover of Dizzy Gillespie's 'A Night In Tunisia.' That has always been one of my all-time favorite Miles songs. 'I'll Remember April,' 'I Could Write A Book,' 'Doxy,' and 'When The Lights Are Low' are all highlights here.

Sure, his Columbia sides are where he made a name for himself, but if you want to hear Miles after his late-'40s Blue Note/Capitol sides and before his 1959 masterpiece 'Kind Of Blue,' than this is a great place to look.

Highly recommended for any Miles fan. It's a great set. But keep in mind that with the exception of the bonus disc, which is a jazz sampler from some other artists that recorded on the Prestige label (Coltrane, Farmer, Rollins, etc.), it's identical to the 2003 release on Prestige, 'Best of Miles Davis.'

Highly recommended for any MD fan. ENJOY!!!
