Made of heavy cast aluminum with a nonstick surface inside and out, this multipurpose cooker with lift-and-drain basket simmers soups and stews, browns and roasts meats, boils corn on the cob and other vegetables, steams fish and rice, and deep fries shrimp and other foods. And in addition to its everyday versatility, the cooker can be washed in the dishwasher after simply removing the heat control. The glass lid is also dishwasher-safe. For safety, the cooker comes with a short 30-inch cord with a magnetic coupler that attaches to the heat control; if jostled, the cord detaches at the magnetized point to help prevent the kettle from being overturned. An easy-turn knob on the heat control adjusts the cooking temperature from warm to 400 degrees Fahrenheit. Two large handles make the cooker easy to lift, and four sturdy legs keep the heat off the countertop. The cooker measures 9 inches in diameter and stands 7-1/2 inches tall. I was about to buy a "FryDaddy" small deep fryer at a retail store when the clerk at the checkout asked whether I'd looked at this item right next to it (she'd just bought one herself). I went back and swapped my FryDaddy for the Kitchen Kettle, with no regrets. This gives you deep-frying capability but also functions as a sort of non-crockery slow cooker. My first weekend, I deep-fried chicken wings on Friday night and then made a chicken-and-rice dish on Saturday, with fine results both times.

The heat does come from the bottom, I should note, not from the sides as in a true slow-cooker. Some may not like that. The instructions include recommendations for cleaning the non-stick bottom if it becomes discolored. The kettle is non-stick inside and out.

Best of all, unlike my older-model slow cooker, this one can be immersed (after you unplug the electrical unit).

Because of the danger posed by hot oil when you deep-fry, the unit has a magnetic breakaway cord. Tripping over or tugging the cord will simply separate it from the unit rather than tip the unit over. (Even so, be careful with kids around.)

All in all, seems to be a good buy -- a multi-tasker rather than a specialized item that will wind up in the yard sale.

This is a great product that heats up VERY fast, shows quality in design and the teflon seems to be thick rather than the paper thin coating on cheaper appliances. Only time will tell if it holds up but so far, no problem, even using the Whirley-pop popcorn maker top on it to avoid the aluminum pot that comes with the Whirley. It makes the best popcorn I have ever had with no burning and every kernal popped, set at 350... and it does it FAST. Here is my recipe: half cup premium popcorn, tablespoon of canola oil or peanut oil, 2 tablespoons of raw, unprocessed sugar or brown sugar, 1 teaspoon salt. Within minutes the lid starts to rise right off the pot. It is great for soups, deep frying, baking potatoes, etc. Great product that inspires creativity.

We were looking for a fry-daddy at the time of finding the Presto Kitchen Kettle Multi-Cooker. The salesperson recommended this instead of the fry daddy telling us we could use it for more than just a deep fryer. We bought it and absolutely love it. Being able to regulate the heat unlike the fry daddy makes this a universal cooker. We have made spaghetti, goulash, chicken, chicken and noodle soup, and it makes great popcorn. Also it makes a big pot of chili. We highly recommend this product.
