The first thing anyone should know before buying this book is that it has been previously published under another name, Far From Xanadu.
I saw this in the bookstore and thought it was a new book by one of my favorite authors, but it is the same book, just a different cover and title.

That being said, it is an excellent read.
The story is about Mike, the only lesbian in her entire high school, and her crush on the new girl in town, Xanadu. There is a claustrophobic, small town atmosphere to the novel. Mike has to deal with her father's suicide, coming out to her family and friends, and learning to deal with heartbreak.
She is a strong character that you root for from start to finish.

I read Pretend You Love Me when it came out in hardcover as Far From Xanadu. Reading it again, Pretend You Love Me still has the impact it did when I read it the first time. Have you ever loved someone who can't or won't love you back?

This is what is happening to Mike Szabo, who is many things - a great fast-pitch softball player, friend, plumber - but is caught up in the grief of her father's suicide, her mother's denial by food, and her brother's acting out. Then she walks into Mike's English class - Xanadu. From the first, Mike feels something for Xanadu - something she's never felt before. Mike's known for the longest time that she's a lesbian, but she hadn't had feelings for any girl until Xanadu. Will Mike choose the girl who can't love her over her future??

I found myself rooting for Mike the entire time - caught up in her hurt, pain, and discovery of joyful feelings. I felt like Xanadu was a good example of someone who leads a person on, knowing how they feel about them, but will never reciprocate. I love the characters and how realistic Ms. Peters made life in small-town Kansas. This is a great book and I highly recommend it! Ms. Peters has a way with words that makes you want to revisit the world she's created over and over again.

Despite the hype surrounding this book, I disliked the ending (will not spoil it) and how manipulative a certain character could be. I love Julie Anne Peters, and while some think this is her finest work, I do not. My favorite book is Between Mom And Jo. I think that has what this book lacks, a ton of emotion without the...ending this one has.

character development are 7/10, Julie Anne Peters books are usually terrific, but this one was below my expectation, the ending was unsatisfying, the main character's crush are underdeveloped, i cant feel that they actually exist.

The writing the story may have been lacking at times, but the character and her story was always on point. The main character and her struggle with her sexuality and her straight-girl crush is a story many in the LGBT community can relate to. I was happy that the ending was some cheesy ending with everyone happy in the end. Instead it told a more realistic tale with the main character's romance ending bittersweet, but also growing from the experience
