My 3 year old son just got this for his birthday and has been playing with it nonstop for days now! Best of all, the food from the LeapFrog shopping cart works with this cash register.About 10 minutes after using this toy, my son was able to tell the difference between all of the coins and he loves to put the extra price tags on his other toys and scan them too! The coins did get stuck one time so far, but it is really really easy to get them unstuck. I would highly recommend this toy as a math, counting, learning toy!

This is a great learning toy, but my ONLY complaint is that the coins get stuck in the drop slot. When my 3 year old got this toy for his birthday he was very excited. After about 5 minutes of playing with it, the coins got stuck in the machine...and he lost interest. Everytime he plays with the cash register, I end up having to get the screwdriver out to "unplug" the stuck coins. It interrupts play and therefore he moves on to a different toy.

We gave this cash register to our 4 yr. old and 2 yr. old last Christmas. It has since been used for countless games of "Store" and is still working and looking great (5 months later). As a parent and home educator, my favorite feature is the coins, which are made to resemble actual coins, but are surrounded by color-coded plastic rings to help children learn to identify the correct amounts. The price scanners are another neat, unique function, as the kids can customize price amounts for their store "merchandise."My children remain interested in this toy, partially because cash registers just add to the fun of pretend play, and perhaps partially due to the four different modes of play. I appreciate the volume control button, too! I can understand the complaint about coins getting stuck, but we have never had any real problems with this. They really only get jammed if a child loads too many coins in the slot at once. Our children have learned to remove the coins after inserting just a few. Bottom line: I highly recommend this toy if you are looking for a high-quality cash register, or just an exciting means of learning math concepts.

My son loved this toy and in no time was telling me about money. Its fun, keeps the attention (which my son has problems with but this held his greatly!) seems durable specially with how ruff he gets at times, colorful, and a leap frog product - great learning

Fun for kids, but very loud,

I bought this toy for my daugter for Christmas. She loves to play with the register. It is a great learning tool. She can recognize coins now and even tells me how much they are each worth. The register scanner works great. It is really sensitive to the tags so my daughter doesn't get frustrated trying to scan them. Also, we have the shopping cart and the scanner recognizes those items, too. There are multiple functions on the cash register for differents types of play. They can play with the money and act like it is a real register or they can do different types of games where they search for what the register asks. The small screen even helps them along. The only bad thing about this toy is that the volume isn't controlled like the other toddler toys by leapfrog. Those toys have a switch that you can put the toy on a definite volume. This toy has a button that you press to change the volume. Everytime you turn the toy off or it turns itself off (battery saver, nice!!!) the volume returns to the loudest. It could wake the dead it is so loud. Other than that, the toy is great and you can easily turn the volume down. After your heart slows down from the scare of a noise so loud you think your house is falling in. I don't know about anyone else, but I am not as young as I used to be. I don't know how many times you can scare me like that.

stop talking and let them explore,

Sigh. It's a really CUTE cash register. The money is adorable, too - looks pretty real and is enclosed in plastic rings that make them much less of a choking hazard. The whole thing looks so friendly, until you turn it on and it starts yelling. Even after adjusting the volume the talking is incessant - any push of a button results in one or two sentences about that activity. Maybe a toy for learning the exact things LeapFrog has in mind, but not a toy for old-fashioned pretend and exploration. Too bad. It's so cute. Maybe one day they'll add a "no talk" mode.

I love this toy becouse it teaches my boys about money. The only thing I don't like is that the money always gets stuck in the slot. It does have an opening to get the money out, but you need a screwdriver. So every time they put the money in to quickly after another, I have to go find my hand screwdriver. My boys have a great time playing with this cash register. If this one ever broke, I would go out and by another one. It is the best on I have found.

We have had this toy for 2 weeks now and my 3 year old and 11 month old both play with it at least once a day. We have NOT had any coins get stuck as other reviewers mentioned but I could see how it would happen if the child were to continue forcing coins in the slot. Both of my girls love it and my older daughter has learned how to tell the different coins apart in a short period of time. BE CAREFUL with baby brothers/sisters though! My 11 month old did get one of the coins all the way in her mouth and was gagging on it (unable to get it back out) until I came to her rescue and pulled it out - very scarey!

This register does have some fun, and educational qualities, as you would expect from the Leapfrog brand. I bought it knowing that it would be more durable than a cheap $10 bo-bo brand one would be (and it is).
We gave it to my 3 1/2 yr old daughter for Christmas. I also bought her the shopping cart set too. (It's nice bcs the pieces interchange.) My daughter likes it and plays with it fairly often. She will out-grown it soon though. Here's my biggest letdown list: 1.) The coins get stuck. Slip a butter knife in there, and you can get loosen them with no problem. If your child will excitedly push coins through as fast as possible- this will happen. 2.) The automated voice only counts to ten. Yes, you can only count to ten. The coins are all identified correctly, but when it is in the counting mode, it's only to ten. 3.) There is no "free-play" option. Sometimes, we like (my daughter and I!) to play store, and just want to ring things up based on what we type into the register (like a calculator). You cannot ring things up for say $9.99 (and have the computer-voice identify the amount). Instead, you have to turn the thing completely off (and just-gasp-PRETEND to), or risk hearing the voice interrupt itself endlessly. It is basically designed to ring up the included Leapfrog toys only. Nor can you type in the payment amount of say $10, let alone figure change. I'm not sure you can ring up anything over $1.29?! It also doesn't "total up" multiple items. 4.) There is no debit/credit card option. How sad is that?! My daughter LOVES paying at the real grocery store and that was one feature mommy overlooked on this machine. My daughter is bummed that it doesn't have that option to swipe a card. Maybe that's a good thing?! Things I do Like: 1.) The coins are realistic looking and have the safety covers. They are color coded to help child distinguish them while learning. They aren't a choking hazard. 2.) Volume control. Thank you Leapfrog. 3.) Unisex color, durable plastic, cute kids' voices. 4.) Works with the shopping cart. Bottom line, my daughter likes it and it is suitable for toddlers, but if you want a more realistic cash register toy, this isn't it.

How to rig this toy so it will work...maybe,

=o) I would not have purchased this toy, but we received it free along with our other Leap Frog purchases. It arrived in the mail today, and I eagerly took it out to inspect it myself, after reading the 50 reviews here...
First, it is a hard toy to sneak into - if you are the kind of parent (like me) who likes to trial-play before wrapping. =o) Tons of tape, wires, tricky cardboard folds. Second, I did not think the start-up sound was shockingly loud. Third, I happily started pushing coins in - and guess what - they got jammed. I felt like I'd joined the Screwdriver Club as I went to retrieve ours. You don't just "Drop" the coins in. You have to push them past some resistance. Once they've been pushed in, you see them in a clear tunnel which is vertical. If it were sloped, the coins would roll down better to the outside "change pocket." I was a little sad that they didn't roll down into the drawer. The drawer, I guess, is just for storage. I did not cram the coins in quickly, like my kids will. All the same, because they didn't always roll across the tunnel, I ended up pushing one down on top of another causing an internal jam. Then I said, "ah ha! The handy little built-in door!" It was not hard to unscrew the small door and poke the screwdriver inside to unjam the coins. However, I do not wish to do that every time this toy is played with, so I used clear tape to hinge the door back on - a piece on inside & outside of door - and used another piece of tape with crimped edge to hold the door shut. I would have left the door off entirely, but it looks nicer this way. You know those awful wires they use to wire toys into their boxes? The black plastic strips that serve as wire anchors, or whatever - I've put one on a ribbon to be the Cashier's Key. I think my 3-year-old will be able to open the taped door and use her Key to unjam the coins... maybe... it's worth a shot. At least that will give me time to get the screwdriver, or a nail file, or metal chopstick... Another idea I have is to secure something (tape folded cardboard) to the bottom of the register to make it tilt to its side, so the coins will be sure to roll quickly out of the way of the next one coming. Again, it's worth a try. Besides these engineering flaws, I think my daughter will enjoy this toy and learn something about money from it. The coins are not entirely encased in plastic - only around the edges and on backside. You can feel the texture of the front of the fake coins. I wish the coins were large replicas of actual coins, in varied sizes, but oh well. Free toy. |
