BLOG CRITICS
Savannah Mae, May 13, 2014

The Pretender - Saving Luke is action packed and a super fast paced page turner that, once again, I was not able to put down.

From the Author

Is it possible for story to renew your sense of wonder, that magical feeling we have as children that life is a gift to be shared with others?

Is it possible for a few pages from a novel - a psychological thriller at that - to stir anew a feeling that you have a positive place in this world?

Is it possible that a story so compelling can not only keep you completely entertained but, at the same time, increase your self-confidence and understanding that you are not alone in this world?

The story of The Pretender has been doing that and more for tens of millions of people around the world for over a decade first as a hit cult television show and now as a series of novels and it will do it for you as well.

And the reason is - The Pretender makes you feel - like you haven't felt in years.

I got his great fan letter recently from a wonderful woman in Australia saying that to her the Pretender was like the Roberta Flack song Killing Me Softly;  Strumming my pain with his fingers,
Singing my life with his words.  To her the Pretender reached into her soul, read her pain and emotions and understood her.  "It say what I am thinking before I say it myself. When I read The Pretender I feel like I belong to something larger than myself.  Something special."

People are affected on a personal, emotional, level The Pretender empowers them, dissolves their feelings of isolation- it connects people from various walks of life in a very special way.

A reporter wrote an article about the books and the upcoming graphic novels that really speaks to that.

"Somewhere in the late 1990s there was an odd moment in my life. I sat around visiting with my parents and my older brother. My brother and I are very different. He's the off-roading, gun shooting, get drunk and party type. I'm more of the plus hotel, fine art, sipping whisky and conversing type. My folks are blue-collar, do-it-yourself, poker night couple. But we have two things in common, we all love football and that one weird night in the late 90s we discovered that we all loved The Pretender.

We have literally received thousands letters - thousands of emotional connections people have to the characters and the story.

From a grateful father in France thanking us for The Pretender - and telling us that when his six year old daughter was diagnosed with cancer the fearlessness of the character of Miss Parker gave her the strength to endure and finally win her battle with it.

From a vibrant woman in in the US who wrote to tell of harrowing childhood of sexual abuse and how on her 16th birthday she was writing her suicide note until she started listening to the story of The Pretender and strengthened by the characters within it put down her pen.  Along with her letter this incredible woman sent us a photograph of her with her five children.

Or the young man who recently emailed us saying: "I'm sure you've heard this before but children from broken or disorganized family units can really relate to the characters in tP.  Reading Rebirth and Saving Luke I am remembering why this resonated with me so much when I was eight and the subject of EPIC custody battle.
If you don't mind hearing it yet again, potent stuff.   Thanks..."

People ask often how we planned a story and created characters that resonate emotionally with so many people?  But the truth is we didn't we didn't plan it.  We wrote a story from our hearts and it has and continues to somehow touch other people's hearts.

I guess no matter where you are in the world we're not that different.

You see I grew up in a broken, crazily dysfunctional family in New Orleans - one so full of secrets and lies that it would have made Tennessee Williams really start drinking.

As a little boy - much like the character of Jarod in our novels - I never felt comfortable in my world where psychological and physical abuse was the norm.

Intrinsically I felt that this couldn't be the way life was supposed to be

Luckily I spent two weeks a year at my grandfather's - my 'Big Daddy's' house in a little town in north Louisiana.  He was my island of sanity - he showed me what it was to be a man and a real, loving person and that no matter what you could over come anything in life.  That you could be anyone you wanted to be.

More importantly my Big Daddy taught me to tell stories - and I guess it is no mistake that the stories I like to tell best are imbued with his optimism and realization that life is a gift to be enjoyed by all.

I think you will enjoy The Pretender as much as the millions of other have around the world.

Steve Mitchell

The Pretender Lives!

Many fan references are so ‘on-the-nose’ that they read like poor fan fiction additions rather than canon story.

I was so happy when the creators of The Pretender decided to continue their storytelling in book form. Rebirth (first book in the series) was a great read, but Saving Luke is even better. It's very fast-paced and impossible to put down once you start reading. The characters we have come to know and love leap off the page and being able to spend time with them again is a most welcome delight. Steven and Craig are great storytellers and they know these characters inside and out and they know what the fans want from them ~ and boy do they deliver! There are new insights to be gleaned and a big reveal name-wise (although not the one I long for. I know it will come eventually. Note to Steve and Craig: We'll still call her Miss Parker even if we know her first name!). I highly recommend Saving Luke and can't wait to see where Jarod, Miss Parker and the rest of the gang go next!

I was hooked on the 90's TV Show "The Pretender" from the very first episode. I didn't know much about the program at its inception other than my all-time favorite actor, Michael T. Weiss, had the male lead. At the time, that's really all I cared about. Michael was back on TV and it didn't matter if the show was good or bad I was gonna watch it just to see him, but it quickly turned into more than that for me.

Jarod's search for his family, identity and desire to help others touched me in a way no other story ever has before, and it really hit home. My mother always taught me life wasn't worth living if you couldn't help someone. It didn't matter that his captors were always on his heels attempting to return him to the Centre, if he knew someone had escaped justice and wronged another, he made every effort to correct it.

Watching Jarod, who'd been held captive for thirty years, experience the small joys in life for the very first time was simply magical; he was like a kid in a candy store. Michael brought Jarod to life in such a way that made you feel his pain, his loss and his joy, and he made you believe anything was possible as long as the Pretender was on the job.

I was compelled to follow Jarod's journey every week, wondering who he would help next, would he be captured and returned to the Centre, but most of all if he would find his family. Then the rug was pulled out from under me and NBC, in their infinite wisdom, canceled the best show ever on TV after four incredible seasons.

Fast Forward thirteen years, and the creators of the 90's cult classic have brought it back in a BIG way in novel form.

I read and liked the first one. Liked this one better. Moves fast. So much happening. Characters are great, story has lots of twists and turns. And surprisingly, it has lots of heart. You don't always get that with this genre. Def recommend!

Saving Luke is the perfect follow up to The Pretender creators first novel Rebirth. With it's vivid imagery and intelligent dialogue this novel sucked me I to a world that I did not want to leave. Jarod, Sydney and Miss. Parker came to life page after page, reminding this long time fan exactly why they have never left my heart. Overall, I could not put this novel down. If it wasn't for 7am meetings I would have read it throughout the night. It is that great. Well done! All I can say is I want more!!!

“Saving Luke” is action packed and a super fast paced page turner that, once again, I was not able to put down. Points of views are switched seamlessly giving the reader information and the back-story as needed. With Jarod’s brilliant mind, I was amazed over and over again with his clever ways to escaping his hunters. Leaving his physiatrist, Sydney, clues along the way, there isn’t any telling what is going to happen from chapter to chapter.

“The Pretender – Saving Luke” is filled with elements of fear, rage, guilt, emotion, lies, deceit, cover-ups and of course the very colorful characters all come together perfectly for an edge-of-your-seat read. “Saving Luke” has the depth and quality required to make it as a best seller. Steven Long Mitchell & Craig W. Van Sickle make one hell of a story come to life on these pages and without their brilliant minds, Jarod’s mind would be nothing. “Saving Luke,” being the second volume in this series, has proved to be better than the first. Keep it coming fellas, I am excited to see what is next for The Pretender! 5 Stars!

While I am fairly new to The Pretender, Rebirth and now, Saving Luke have captured my imagination and heart. While reading the book, the characters came alive and I was taken even deeper into the minds of Jarod and Miss Parker in a way that I had been anxiously awaiting after reading Rebirth. The characters not only take life on these pages but the authors also come into their own, delivering more complete, dynamic characters and plot twists in what is truly a page turner. In Saving Luke, the Pretender transforms from an TV series into a page turning novel series that I would recommend to all - new to the Pretender or die-hard fans!
