Margaret Comerford Freda is Associate Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology and Director of Patient Education Programs at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine, Montefiore Medical Center, Bronx, New York, and serves as the Consultant for Nursing Research at Montefiore Medical Center. Dr. Freda is also Editor of MCN, The American Journal of Maternal Child Nursing. Dr. Freda has published many research studies on preterm birth-prevention and is a frequently invited speaker at medical, public health and nursing conferences. Dr. Freda is a member of the American Nurses Association (ANA), the Association for Women’s Health, Obstetric, and Neonatal Nurses (AWHONN), Sigma Theta Tau, and the American Academy of Nursing. She is the Chair of the March of Dimes Nurse Advisory Council. For her lifetime of work with women and children, she has received numerous awards including the Patient Care Award for Excellence in Patient Education from the American Academy of Family Physicians, the First National Excellence in Nursing Research Award from AWHONN, and the Distinguished Professional Service Award from AWHONN. Dr. Freda has developed patient education videotapes and booklets on the prevention of preterm labor that are distributed nationally by the March of Dimes.

Ellen Tate Patterson is a consultant in maternal-child nursing in Birmingham, Alabama and a Faculty Affiliate at the Ida V. Moffet School of Nursing. Dr. Patterson has extensive experience working as a nursing research facilitator in clinical settings. Her program of research focuses on health care seeking during pregnancy. She has been a March of Dimes Summer Fellow at the Center for Low Birthweight Research, School of Nursing, University of Pennsylvania, and she has received funding from the American Nurses Foundation for her research on the care-seeking process during preterm labor. Dr. Patterson is a member of ANA, AWHONN, Sigma Theta Tau, and the National Women's Health Network. She has also served as a member of the Committee on Research for AWHONN and is currently a member of its Science Team developing a research-based protocol for preterm labor. Dr. Patterson has written and spoken widely on research utilization and on women’s perceptions of preterm labor and birth, and she is committed to helping maternal-child health nurses develop research-based practices. --This text refers to an alternate Paperback edition.
