4.0 out of 5 stars Sometimes you can't get out, February 18, 2009
This review is from: Pretty Brown: A Novel (Paperback)
I was looking for a quick read the other day when I remembered that I hadn't read `Pretty Brown' by Genaro. `Lockdown' was pretty cool so hoping this was along the same lines I decided to give it a shot.

Alex and Freddy are childhood homies. They've been through it all and have always had each other's back. Freddy has always been the more ambitious one when it comes to easy money, getting into drug dealing and always looking for a way to expand. Alex is more cautious about making moves. He supports Freddy by collecting his dues and keeping buyers in line but is hesitant of becoming more involved. Alex knows that straightening up and going legit is the smart thing to do, but ultimately he leaves those ideas on the back burner because of a lack of self confidence.

When Alex runs into Sandra - a girl he has had a crush on since high school - they instantly click and become infatuated with each other. She's the drive he needed to put his plans for a better future in motion but soon finds out that it's not going to be that easy. Freddy has come up with a plan that can make them rich and powerful practically overnight; to Alex it sounds like suicide. Now he must find a way to either talk Freddy out of it or make him understand that he can't be a part of the business anymore.

Overall, I liked the story and had a good time reading it. It touches on themes most of us can relate to, namely friends that end up dragging you down and accuse you of changing or "selling out" when you decide to mature. Crab Mentality. `Pretty Brown' feels like an improvement over `Lockdown', the characters have a bit more depth and the story overall is a lot more believable. Give it a read.

1.0 out of 5 stars WORST BOOK!, January 16, 2009
This review is from: Pretty Brown: A Novel (Paperback)
This book was extremely short, and there were several errors I found. I hated this book because it's just depressing and dark. It left me wanting to shred it in my shredder so I could forget how horrible I feel after reading it. I am a person who understands the characters that were described in the book, however; this book was sooooooo depressing!

I would recommend "Forever My Lady" by: Jeff Rivera, but not this particular book.

Ahh...I hated it!
