Best of Hole,
By Fuchsia (United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Pretty on the Inside (Audio CD)
Strangly enough Pretty on the Inside has always been my favorite album of Holes. I love and know all the words to Live Through This but Pretty On the Inside is more wild, less commercial, it has more raw beauty and Courtney holds nothing back. This is the album that helped get me through my high school years also. There are more hidden jewels in Pretty on the Inside and the lyrics are wonderful. On Live Through This the songs were more individual and controlled but Pretty on the Inside is one wild, fantastic, beautiful mess. If you liked Celebrity Skin you may not like this album but you should at least give it a try.

Hole owns you,
This review is from: Pretty on the Inside (Audio CD)
Oh my god. This is about my favorite album of all time, along with American Thighs by Veruca Salt, Nevermind by Nirvana, and England by the Sex Pistols. The lyrics are incredibly raw and you're sucked in by "Garbage Man." Seriously, if you do not own this, you should. This was a pivotal moment for feminist punk-rockers everywhere. I love Hole to death, and Pretty on the Inside is my favorite of their albums, though I like Live Through This as well. On Celebrity Skin, they were all caught up in ego and fame, not to mention MTV airwaves. I blame Celebrity Skin for Hole's breakup, because they could not have attempted any harder to sell out. When you go that mainstream, there's nowhere to go but the downward spiral. Back in the day when Pretty on the Inside was released, they were just up there, and it was all about the music. Pretty on the Inside is a perfect combination of grunge, punk, and tell it like it is, raw to the bone, slap in the face lyrics. It should be a crime for anyone to not own this album, it was a truly pivotal moment for women in rock everywhere.
KURT COBAIN LIVES ON! Courtney Love... you rock, thank you for making my day a full ten times better Mwah! Hope this review helped!

Considering the fact that 've been a fan of Hole since I was maybe..mmm,circa 1996(my sister puchased LTT a little later than release date)and being I was only 6 at the time,I fell in LOVE with the album. My first taste was Violet,I thought it was a great song and I sang the chorus at school(not the smartest idea in catholic school)but back to POTI.This is by far ranked as a creative masterpiece I say. With the gritty anthem to girls who lived life as prostitutes,Teenage Whore is your savior.Courtney then goes into thrashing Kat Bjelland for taking authorship of Courtney's 'kinder-whore' look in the song 'BabyDoll' as the album progresses, you WON'T get bored. It's a punk rock gem, with the slef titled song,it's a prophetic song about how the ugly girls get the anthem of inner beauty. It wraps up with a cover of Joni Mitchell's 'Clouds' which is simply breathtaking.Courtney's vocals are unlike anyone elses, and I definatly give her 10 stars for being a poetic genius and for being the symbol of female sexuality as not just mens toys.No Madonna here! Courtney is crowned "Miss World"

Wether you like this album or not is the way you know hole. If you know them from Celebrity Skin and like those top 40 countdown, you'll hate it. If you know hole from Live Thru this theres a 50/50 chance you'll like it/hate it. I suggest you download their first single and listen to it once a day for a week. I dunno... Garbage man or Teenage Whore. Listen to it again and again. If youre addicted, buy the album. If you hate them, repeat. You have to remember rock is not easy listening, the album is incredibly catchy if you listen to it again and again. One way to start liking the album isby playing it on guitar coz those are fast entertaining songs to play. When i heard it for the first time, i swore i said: "Im gonna stay away from this cd". I started listening to Garbage Man, god is it catchy. You'll either love it or hate it. Good Luck.

Raw, witty, real and angry,
By

Even though she is tailed by an endless string of allegations that she is not a good musician in her own right, Asking For It proves that Hole can and does rock, Blissfuly unpolished, the selections take us through rejection, acceptance, life and death. As with all other albuns, concepts and ideas of what modern womanhood really means is woven through out the tracks. The fact that it is not top 40 and/or mass media friendly is the whole point of this album and people who continue to gripe about the so-called sloppy work are missing the point entirely. Courtney and Hole were stars of their own right even before the world was caught up in Nirvana mania. No grrrl should be without this CD

slut me open,

Heavy, raw and open; this CD really blows away any of the so called "Riot Grrls." A lot of kids want "Punk Rock" but they want it as a suburban commodity, nice and pretty and clean. These songs are angry, pissed off, dirty and ooze with female bombast. This is a classic CD and when the smoke clears, you will see that this is grungier and nastier than Nirvana or other so called grunge bands.

Pretty on the Outside,

This album blows me away, every time I listen to it. At first I had a hard time working with Courtney's screams.. but then it turned into a full assault on the mind and senses. Courtney's lyrics are raw.. and often bleed like an open wound.. pouring out hatred and everything that riotgrrls screamed for in the early 1990s. Courtney surely is the "Queen of Noise" on this record, with tracks like "Teenage Whore", "Garbage Man", and "Mrs. Jones". Strap yourself in tight for the long rollercoaster that is Ms. Love herself (and of course Caroline Rue, Jill Emery and Eric Erlandson on this record) Very different than later Hole "Live Through This" and you cannot even compare "Celebrity Skin" to "Pretty on the Inside". Sure, they were a young band, and this was their debut record, but you can tell right from the get go that nothing was going to stop Courtney and her lyrics are reflective of that. Amazing stuff.

Loud. Raw. Powerful. This is Hole in it's former original glory days before the overproduction and callifornication of "Celebrity Skin" (no i didn't like it thankyou.) Songs that rock - "Good Sister/Bad Sister", "Teenager Whore" and "Babydoll" are all some of the finest angry-grunge songs that i've ever listened to. It hasnt been overproduced so it still remains real like a live version. Courtney is truly in her element when she is allowed to let go like this. The guitar riffs and bass really rip through each song, and i can guarantee not everyone's going to like this style of raw, but sucks to be them to miss out on such emotion. I also recommend "Live through this".

The Best One,
By Kitty Jeffcoat (North, SC United States) - See all my reviews

This IS the best Hole alblum by far. It has more raw intensity than anything I've heard in a very long time! I have also bought Celebrity Skin & Live Through This, they don't even compare. They are good alblums, but nothing like POTI. If you absolutely love Celebrity Skin & Live Through This, you won't like POTI. POTI is not "radio friendly" like the other two. So for those of you who love the top 40 [stuff] they play on the radio, don't buy this. If you love heavy in you face music this is definitely one you need to get!

Best underground recording of 1991,
By A Customer
This review is from: Pretty on the Inside (Audio CD)
This album really shows the raw side of Hole. You really have to love Hole to enjoy this album. It's extreme and loud. Not to mention angry. Deep and powerful, this recording is like the evil twin of 'Live Through This'. Love's vocals really are what make this album so intense. REAL Hole fans, invest in this one. It's a truly extraordinary album.
