Curtis Lee, born in Yuma, Arizona on October 28, 1941, began singing professionally in 1959, and in late 1960 was signed to the fledgling Dunes Records, just launched by singer Ray Peterson (Tell Laura I Love Her and Corinna, Corinna among others) and his manager, Stan Shulman. His initial releases - Then I'll Know/Calif. GL-903 (Dunes 801), D In Love/Special Love (Dunes 2001) and Pledge Of Love b/w a re-release of Then I'll Know (Dunes 2003) - all missed the charts, but in mid-1961, a song he and Tommy Boyce composed called Pretty Little Angel Eyes surged to # 7 Billboard Pop Hot 100 in July/August on Dunes 2007 b/w Gee How I Wish You Were Here.

Two factors helped propel that tune up the charts. One was the production talent of one Phil Spector, and the other was the backing of the R&B group The Halos, especially their bass Arthur Crier, who were even then on the charts themselves with their novelty hit, "Nag" (7 Arts 709 - # 25 Hot 100 in July/August), as well as backing Barry Mann on his smash, Who Put The Bomp (In The Bomp, Bomp, Bomp) - a # 7 Hot 100 in August/September on ABC-Paramount 10237.

And although Spector also produced the follow-up Under The Moon Of Love, The Halos weren't part of the release and so it levelled off at # 46 Hot 100 in October on Dunes 2008 b/w Beverly Jean. And with neither Spector nor The Halos involved, each of his next four releases went nowhere: Just Another Fool/A Night At Daddy Gee's (Dune 2012), The Wobble/Does He Mean That Much To You? (Dunes 2015), Better Him Than Me/Lonely Weekends (Dunes 2020), and Mr. Mistaker/Pickin' Up The Pieces Of My Heart (Dunes 2021).

Like contemporaries Fabian and Rod Lauren, he had the looks, but an average, country-sounding voice could not sustain him for long and by 1969 he was out of the music business and into the family construction enterprise. This collection offers all his Dunes output, except Calif. GL-903, in excellent sound, and with informative liner notes.

The first Curis Lee single Pure Love was issued in the U K on Top Rank in 1959 from this first label Warrior but it would be 2 years before the hits on Dunes both of which were revived in the 70s by Showaddywaddy-who also recorded the follow up the Gary U S Bonds inspired A Night At Daddy Gee's.
While Lee meant nothing here there was no doubt some potential in the first Dunes singles as Under The Moon Of Love made No 1.
Meanwhile Curtis Lee had long gone his name not being as famous as the Liverpool singer who reversed his name to become Lee Curtis
Today there's been endless repeats on CD of those Dunes hits
Lee never cut an album at the time so calling this a Best of is rather silly as this is the Complete Works

Prior to purchasing, I knew very little about Curtis Lee with the exception of his hit Pretty Little Angel Eyes. I enjoyed his lesser known releases.
