SHINANO WOUNDS BUDDING MANGA-KA,
By Sesho "www.sesho.libsyn.com" (Pasadena, TX USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Pretty Maniacs Volume 3 (v. 3) (Paperback)
While Shinano's manga club is getting a self-made fanzine/manga together and expanding its space in the clubhouse, one of its members, Suo, is doing something a little more serious. He is writing and drawing his own manga to be featured in a magazine in two days. But his dreams suffer a blow when he injures his drawing hand whilst rescuing Shinano from a fallen bookcase! It's up to her and friend Chihaya to be his assistants to get the job done before the deadline.
A new character arrives on the scene as Sara Verlinden, an American otaku who works for Shinano's brother is sent to Japan to get a true education in the world of anime and manga. Of course, he sends her to live with the girls at Maniac Road because he knows she will be steeped in the otaku culture while she's staying there. It's sad to say it but this is the last volume of Pretty Maniacs...at least for the forseeable future. I'll miss its whimsy and charm. It's really easy to identify with the characters being a wanna-be otaku myself. All of them have an intense passion and committment to what they're doing, and you don't feel as though they'll ever grow out of this love for anime and manga. I would also recommend the prequel to this series, Maniac Road. Genshiken and Comic Party, available in both anime and manga versions are also the next logical stops after reading this. |
