An overlooked classic,
By Psyche Kid (Swinging London) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Pretty Monster (Audio CD)
With British guitar music at its most successful (sales-wise) in many years the emphasis has unfortunately been on second rate pop punk bands (see the libertines, razorlight etc), left-field rock (block party, kasabian) and emotional rock (snow patrol, keane). How a band as sumptous, eclectic and inventive as fort lauderdale could be overlooked is a mystery. From the opening, kooky, red-herring 'insane overdrive' through to elegaic, eno-esque closer 'pretty monster' this album showed more invention, poise and beauty than the rest of the brit-pack's records will ever show. the playing is tight and funky (see sexy creature a 2 minute instumental that fuses the 13th floor elevators with grand funk railroad and it works!), the lyrics at turns witty (rock and roll), surreal (chilling place) and romantic (silent ways) whilst the range of styles is breathtaking. Since this record was released the steve webster and toby jenkins have gone their seperate ways (webster is now 'the black neon, whilst jenkins is 'the squire of somerton') but, phew! what a way to go..... |
