Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

PreSchool-Grade 1—With quiet flair, Tilly, a little girl, helps her animal pals when they get into mischief. Tumpty the elephant requests lipstick as he admires Pru primping. The petite hen rebuffs his request: "You'll waste it." When she notices that her purse with all her makeup is missing, Tilly helps search for it. They discover that Hector the pig's lashes are enhanced with mascara and Tiptoe the bunny's cheekbones glow with a lovely shade of blush. Doodle the alligator sports an impressive manicure with nail polish. Tumpty is found prancing with Pru's purse on his head and adorned with her necklace. All of Tilly's friends are sorry, especially Tumpty, for their behavior, and Tumpty and Pru move forward in an effort of generosity and sharing. This tender story is complemented with colorful and expressive mixed-media illustrations.—Anne Beier, Hendrick Hudson Free Library, Montrose, NY

"* "This is a warm and charming story told without the cloying sentimentality that can mar books for this age group... Dunbar's characterisation is a treat." The Bookseller on Penguin" --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

Tilly and Friends is generally a pretty good series, and Polly Dunbar's illustrations are endearing and fun. But this book is a few notches below the rest.

Pru is a hen. She looks a bit like Mae West. As the story gets underway, she's preening about in front of a mirror. "Oh pretty," said Pru. "I'm so pretty!"

What's going on with this narcissistic outburst? As we learn, "She was putting on her favorite red lipstick".

Next, Trumpty the elephant enters the scene. He asks, "Can I have some makeup?... Then I can be pretty like you".

What's this saying? Makeup is necessary to be pretty? And do little kids of the age that a story like this is directed to relate to makeup? Do we want them to?

It turns out that Pru is not only vain, but she's also selfish. But in the end, she makes a generous gesture, giving her favorite red lipstick to Trumpty.

But I can't help it. This happy ending doesn't redeem things for me. The whole story just feels a bit too smarmy.

This book is about sharing and how important it is to ask before you use something that does not belong to you. The illustrations are hilarious! We have this as part of our daughter's library and give it to many friends for gifts. We specifically bought this for a little girl whose Mom is a Mary Kay representative :) I hope they enjoy

Tilly and her friends are up to the usual; playing, dressing up, painting, hiding, reading, sleeping and much much more. Doing what kids do best and sometimes...what they don't do so well; biting, yelling, pushing and other not to nice things. What Tilly does for her friends though is show them how to behave their very best and enjoy being together.

This series, though not flashy with glitter and neon colors, is a stand out in my opinion. Without a doubt, over the last couple of months that we've been reading it both Littlebug and Turkeybird have wanted to read each book over and over again, more than any other books on the shelf. To be honest, I was a bit surprised. When they arrived (unjacketd, of course, which is fantastic!) the seemingly plain book spine and pencil type illustrations didn't seem to me to be something the kiddos would gravitate towards. I did of course, I devoured each book that evening on my own, loving the very simple yet beautiful illustrations of Tilly, Tumpty, Doodle and the others. Not to mention the stories were adorable, teaching kids to be polite, not grumpy or selfish, not to bite, when to go to bed and more but in a very funny way. They were also some of the first that my dear sweet Baker (hubby) has really enjoyed reading as well (he's extremely picky about picture books).

Well, I once had a doctor jokingly tell me, "Kids live to prove you wrong" and that is absolutely the case with these books. Immediately they loved them. Not only that, but as Littlebug mentioned, her recent elephant gift for her birthday has been named Tumpty (pronounced "Tumppy" by her) and it must go with her everywhere. They've absolutely fallen in love with the series, as have I.

I read this story two months straight to my daughter. I read the different characters parts with various funny accents. My daughter really like the story and the way it was delivered. It's a must have.
