Book Description

Editorial Review

Pretty Witches All in a Row delivers a compelling crime procedural that kept me guessing the whole way through. Throw in a supernatural twist with magic and a coven of witches, and we're in for quite a ride. Author Lisa Olsen balances the thrills and chills of paranormal mystery with a generous helping of humor, quick banter and well developed characters. Sergeant Nick Gibson is our sympathetic hero; his playful wit and down to earth relationship with his teenage daughter made me root for him from the first chapter. Annaliese, the pretty witch helping with the investigation, is an enigma; you want to trust her, but there are enough questions that you resist letting your guard down, and you end up hoping Nick isn't a fool for placing his faith in her. I hope we'll see this cast of characters again; it'd be a crime not to see where they go next.

Product Description

Someone is picking off a coven of witches one by one. Can Sgt. Nick Gibson and his team of detectives catch the killer before he loses the pretty witch who's got him under her spell?

Nick must cast aside his disbelief and delve into the world of the supernatural to solve the case. On hand to help is Annaliese, a member of the coven who claims to have had a prophetic dream at the exact time of each victim's death, offering clues to the identity of the killer. Can he accept the 'proof' offered by unconventional means or is she deliberately leading him astray to hide her own secrets? To cloud the issue, a local evangelist is telling anyone who asks that the victims had it coming. Is religious mania the motive for murder, or is it something more personal?

5.0 out of 5 stars Superb! November 15, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
For anyone who has doubts about the quality of self-published books, I have a suggestion for you that can be summed up in two words: Lisa Olsen.

Lisa Olsen is one of the finest new authors to come along in recent years. I'll be doing reviews for her other books in the weeks to come, but let's start with Pretty Witches All in a Row. In this spectacular novel, she blends the police procedural with elements of the supernatural that makes me think of Jim Butcher's Dresden Files series.

Someone is killing the members of a coven. Enter Detective Nick Gibson, a practical, down-to-earth cop/single father of a teenage daughter, a man who's having a hard time buying into the idea of witches and covens and prophetic dreams. Will he fall under the spell of the beautiful Annaliese, a self-professed witch who's a member of the targeted coven? Has she really had premonitions of the murders in her dreams, or could there be another reason for her knowledge of the murders? Is Nick a fool to trust her?

Ms. Olsen is a skilled writer whose expert pacing keeps the story moving. She weaves the elements of fantasy into her real-world setting with confidence and populates her fictional world with well-developed, believable characters. This is a book you'll have a hard time putting down. And even though the ending is quite satisfying, you'll undoubtedly be begging for more!

5.0 out of 5 stars Engaging and Fabulous February 8, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
I was incredibly happy with reading this story! The characters were strong and interesting. I loved the strong detail related to police work and found the perspective from the male protagonist refreshing. It kept me reading through to the end without lagging. I enjoyed the supernatural side, unforced and natural it fit well in the genre. I highly recommend this story, especially if you love paranormal and mystery. Lisa does a fantastic job creating believable characters and a plot that keeps you interested and engaged. I loved it!

5.0 out of 5 stars Another great murder mystery by Lisa Olsen December 2, 2011
Format:Paperback
"Pretty Witches All in a Row" is another great murder mystery by Lisa Olsen. It's easy to read and hard to put down. This story not only has all the twists and turns of the classic serial killer murder mystery it also once again very adeptly portrays modern policework and the men and women who do it. Olsen's characterization and scene descriptions are outstanding. As the story quickly unfolds the reader can see the city streets and hear the traffic as well as develop a feel for the personalities of the characters.

I particularly enjoyed the introduction of the "Wiccan Culture" into the facts of the case, which both clouded and revealed information to the investigators. Olsen cleverly leads the readers through several murder investigations where both open and closed minded detectives try to solve the case. Once again Olsen very accurately describes the process and procedure of a criminal investigation and the different types of the people who are involved in it.

This is my favorite "Olsen Murder Mystery" so far and I can't wait for the next one.

1.0 out of 5 stars Terribly Written June 11, 2012
By CTS
Format:Paperback
I quit before the end of the first chapter because of the writing. There is a reason that publishers have readers and editors. Perhaps I will give it another try, as others seem to have found something in it.

(By the way the 'one star' was given only because it seemed a prerequisite to posting a review.)

UPDATE: I finished the book. It is a clever storyline, but the amateurish nature of the writing bothered me all the way through. The dialogue was particularly awkward, and characters seemed to switch accents and speech patterns for no reason. The author has a number of annoying ticks: one "an eye roll" was given would be enough for any book; to have it repeated over and over was just irritating.

3.0 out of 5 stars Real Witches of Somewhere in Oregon August 24, 2012
By tracieb
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
Overall, I liked the story, as it was realistic and had a pretty good pace to it. When I see a description as paranormal, I guess I expect a little more out there in terms of, you know, the normal, but these witches (Wiccans) were what you might find living down the street. So if you are after major witchcraft and spectacular spells, you won't find it here. That is not really a criticism, but not what I expected from the description, either.

There were a couple things that really bugged me. First, Nick is quite possibly the most unprofessional detective in history. Anna is a person of interest in multiple murders. I don't care how cute she is in her bare feet, there is no way he would be allowed to get away with his relationship with her with just a wink and a nod from his coworkers. And then he kept taking her back to the crime scenes "to investigate". I'm not really up on current police procedures, but my guess is that kind of thing is frowned upon.

The second big gripe was the cluelessness of the characters. The mystery itself was well written, but really, we were down to two suspects and they didn't come close to figuring it out. Each of the victims were found to have tea supposedly laced with laudanum in their system. So when the nice witch offers them tea, what do they say? Um, sure, that sounds wonderful, thanks.

This was not a real page turner for me. In fact, I had no problem reading a couple chapters and going to bed at night. This is not normal for me, so I was pretty surprised that I even finished it. That being said, it isn't the worst book I have ever read either.

The supernatural has long been my favorite to write and read. Werewolves, vampires, witchcraft, ghosts, things that go bump in the night; these are a few of my favorite things to write about. Not sparkly beings with phenomenal cosmic power that are always the smartest, bravest, prettiest Mary Sue to walk the planet, but real people who just happen to have this little quirk...
