An Amazing Book -- worth reading, worth recommending!,
This review is from: How to Prevent Miscarriage and Other Crises of Pregnancy: A Leading High-Risk Doctor's Prescription for Carrying Your Baby to Term (Paperback)
Losing my baby was terrible. But the doctors said there were noalternatives but to let "nature run its course." Pregnantnow, I live in fear every day. When I started having problems in this pregnancy, my new doctors said the same thing the old doctors did -- there are no treatments.I tried everything suggested to me -- bed rest, vitamins, healthy eating, no bad stuff. I was told I could do no more. I was told there was nothing I or the doctor could do to stop my baby from being lost. It was absolutely stunning -- and enfuriating -- to read this book and understand that there ARE treatments and preventatives. This book describes things that I can do and things my doctor should be doing. It also describes medical issues and symptoms in wonderfully helpful detail. The author of this book has a 97.5 rate of births among his patients. Everything I have read says that 15-20% of ALL [pregnancies] end in miscarriage. Why is it this doctor is saving so many babies while other doctors are just letting them die? I strongly recommend you read this book and learn what you -- and your doctor -- need to know.

This Book saved my baby!,
By K.L. Berkihiser (USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: How to Prevent Miscarriage and Other Crises of Pregnancy: A Leading High-Risk Doctor's Prescription for Carrying Your Baby to Term (Paperback)
I tried for 6 years to get pregnant and stay pregnant. After 4 pregnancy losses I was at my wits end. I bought this book and read it and was amazed at how much regular doctors (OBs) don't do when you might be losing your baby. I had progesterone shots and carried past 13 weeks for the first time since I began my quest for a baby, AND when I found out I had oligohydramnios in my 20th week it was this book that told me what it was and how to combat it. I knew from the ultrasound that the baby's kidneys and bladder were normal and present, and this book told me if it is not a problem with my baby it is a placental problem. There is of coarse a section on how to treat placental problems, I was already on bed rest, but it said that taking baby aspirin can make a big difference, by my daughters full term birth the condition had reversed itself and my baby was fine! I recommend this book highly, it is written in a format that can be complicated for some to figure out, but it saved my daughters life and kept me from having another IUGR baby and getting Toxemia back. If you are prone to high risk pregnancy or pregnancy losses this book is wonderful and really can help you end up with a healthy baby! I am so glad I bought it!

This review is from: How to Prevent Miscarriage and Other Crises of Pregnancy: A Leading High-Risk Doctor's Prescription for Carrying Your Baby to Term (Paperback)
I am a owner of the book and a patient of the doctor. I have found that the book offers explanations to problems, offers education of the signs and symptoms that other doctors just ignore and offers alternative instructions to helping your next pregnancy be healthy and explains how every mother-to-be has to become "literate" about all of her body signs and partner with her doctor to ensure a successful pregnancy. Most doctors just want to tell you what to do, have time for limited questions and quickly get you through their busy offices. This is one doctor who truly lives up to the high standards of professionalism he discusses in his book and always tries to answer any questions from patients or worried mother-to-be's with questions from all over the world. After following the instructions in this book and partnering with him during my last pregnancy to become pregnancy literate, I delivered a healthy baby boy in August 1998 and look forward to delivering another healthy child in Sept. of this year. All of his patients only have great things to say about him and the sincerity of his caring about making every pregnancy count. I wish all doctors would be trying to save every pregnancy as much as this doctor does.

A BOOK TO ENCOURAGE A PARTNERSHIP BETWEEN DR. AND PATIENT,
By A Customer
This review is from: How to Prevent Miscarriage and Other Crises of Pregnancy: A Leading High-Risk Doctor's Prescription for Carrying Your Baby to Term (Paperback)
After suffering a miscarriage with my first pregnancy and then trying for three long years to get pregnant again, I was delighted to finally find out recently that I am indeed pregnant again! Of course, I am also scared to death that history will repeat itself and my pregnancy will again fail. I am determined, however, to do everything I can to prevent such an occurance, and refuse to believe that "nature" is in control of my body. I know that many miscarriages can be prevented, and I have educatred myself and done everything possible during my time of pre-conception, conception, and post-conception to stack the deck in my favor. This book gave me much added knowledge to use as I continue to promote, monitor, and advocate for the health of my current pregnancy. It describes causes of miscarriage, how to monitor your pregnancy, and distinguishes between which signs and symptoms are normal and which are warning signs. It gives some preventive measures that can be taken, many of which I knew from earlier research, but also new ones that I will definitely try. It encourages a partnership between the patient and her doctor that is absolutely crucial. The author is one of only 400 in the US who is certified in maternal-fetal medicine and has a 97.5 success rate for bringing healthy babies to term in his high-risk pregnancy practice. The book includes testimonials from current and former patients with such discouraging pregnancy histories that you will be amazed at their success after signing on as one of the author's patients and following his plan. For those women who are determined to take control of their bodies and their pregnancies, this book is a must-read!

The book that offers answers,

After suffering two miscarriages and getting no answers or help from my doctor, I was fortunate enough to get my hands on a copy of Dr. Sem's book at the local library. What I got from his book was information that empowered me to make wise decisions about prenatal care and answers to questions I had about my miscarriages. I later had the good fortune to meet Dr. Sem and have him as my obstetrician. I can honestly say he practices medicine unlike any doctor I've met. He is sincere, compassionate, and caring. He also takes time to listen to his patients and to get to know them personally. My husband and I feel very fortunate to know Dr. Sem and can never thank him enough for helping us to have two beautiful, healthy boys. Thank you Dr. Sem for having the courage to share information other doctors don't want their patients to know and for doing everything you can to make every pregnancy count.

Life changing!!,

This review is from: How to Prevent Miscarriage and Other Crises of Pregnancy: A Leading High-Risk Doctor's Prescription for Carrying Your Baby to Term (Paperback)
Reading this book LITERALLY changed my life! After suffering through 2 miscarriages and being told that I would have to endure a third before my doctors would try any testing, I was enlightened by Dr. Semchyshyn. His book is informative and sensitive. I used the references in it to obtain the names of maternal-fetal medicine specialists in my area (a title which I had previously never heard of). I learned a tremendous amount about the possible causes of my problems and was able carry on an intelligent conversation with the maternal fetal medicine specialist whom I chose for my care. I felt empowered by becoming a well-informed patient and no longer felt at the mercy of the medical establishment with regards to testing. This book gave me information, hope and a sense that I was not alone. Testing revealed that I needed progesterone supplementation in the first trimester and I am now the happy mom of two beautiful, healthy boys.

For Men and Women,

I had two miscarriages, and was at the beginning of my third before I began reading Dr. Semchyshyn's book. I felt empowered and no longer felt that I was at the whim of the doctors. When I lost my second baby, I almost went crazy. While experiencing my third miscarriage I was reading Dr. Semchyshyn's book, and slowly began to grow stronger. Before, getting pregnant again, I will follow the examples and look for the signs that were mentioned in this book. I learned that women and men can be partners with the doctor in planning a pregnancy. Potential mothers and fathers should read this book. Great Book!

This review is from: How to Prevent Miscarriage and Other Crises of Pregnancy: A Leading High-Risk Doctor's Prescription for Carrying Your Baby to Term (Paperback)
After my first miscarriage, I was anxious to learn what I could do to prevent a second. This book largely discusses inherent fertitlity problems leading to repeat miscarriage and barely touches on possible environmental factors. It's important to know it was published in '89. If you are looking for an infertility specialist and want to explore various medical treatments, and don't mind the book being outdated, this one's for you.

Not very helpful but probably worth reading,
By A Customer
This review is from: How to Prevent Miscarriage and Other Crises of Pregnancy: A Leading High-Risk Doctor's Prescription for Carrying Your Baby to Term (Paperback)
I read Dr. Sem's book after my second miscarriage. I was surprised by the title since most doctors agree that nobody knows what causes miscarriage or what can be done to prevent it. As it turns out, neither does the author. He explains ways to tell if you are currently miscarrying (but not how to prevent it), which were not helpful to me since in both of my miscarriages I had absolutely no symptoms. It is probably more helpful in explaining signs to look for in heading off pre-term labor. It also has good info on nutrition during pregnancy and does encourage mothers to try again.

Everyone considering Pregnancy should read this book!,

This review is from: How to Prevent Miscarriage and Other Crises of Pregnancy: A Leading High-Risk Doctor's Prescription for Carrying Your Baby to Term (Paperback)
I started reading this book and learned more in two chapters than I knew before! Having recently suffered my first miscarriage, I found myself wondering "why?". Dr. Semchyshyn offers more than the pat answer "Nature Knows Best" and empowers women to learn about their bodies and take charge of their pregnancy. It is great to hear someone in the medical field is fighting the archaic practices of medicine.
