From Publishers Weekly
An estimated 21 million Americans will develop arthritis, and three out of five of those will be diagnosed with the disease while under 65. Yet, in Preventing Arthritis: A Holistic Approach to Life Without Pain, physician Ronald M. Lawrence and health writer Martin Zucker (co-authors of The Miracle of MSM) argue that arthritis need not be an inevitability. In addition to exploring the ways that people who already suffer from arthritis can find relief, they also explain how readers can prevent arthritis through diet, exercise, yoga, massage and sex. From Library Journal
Lawrence, a neurologist with expertise in pain, geriatrics, and sports medicine, has worked with health writer Zucker to produce a balanced program for preventing and coping with osteoarthritis. The authors previously collaborated, with Stanley Jacob, on The Miracle of MSM: The Natural Solution for Pain. Their latest effort discusses the osteoarthritis disease process and how it can be prevented or minimized by exercise, appropriate body mechanics, diet, supplements, and complementary/alternative therapies. Though the book is written at a high reading level, medical terminology is explained in context. The authors include appropriate disclaimers (advice to consult with a physician) and references to scientific literature, as well as information from interviews with alternative therapy experts. Individual case reports are used to illustrate the benefits of health practices advocated throughout the book, and web references are included in the text for additional information on supplements and alternative therapies. This book will appeal to health-conscious readers who have some awareness of the problems created by arthritis, as well as to those in the early stages of arthritis. Recommended for public and consumer health libraries. Margaret Allen, Library Consultant, Stratford, WI
