Book Description

March 9, 1993
The principle of self-demand feeing--that children can regulate eating naturally by themselves, eating only when they are hungry--comes from Hirschmann's successful workshops. Parents who are at a loss on how to deal with their child's overeating, especially those who struggle with food themselves, will find useful, practical information.

This is a great book. The theory that this book encourages is sometimes called *intuitive eating*. I have introduced this method of eating to my family, and I already see wonderful results. It is empowering for our children to learn to listen to their bodies. By respecting our children, and trusting them to know what their bodies need, we stop the power struggles about food in our families. In addition, we give our children a wonderful gift: a healthy relationship with food. Buy the book!

5.0 out of 5 stars Very helpfull approach, May 21, 2001

I thought that the book was an excellent guide, not only in dealing with preventing eating problems in children, but to assist myself with eating problems that I have struggled with since I was a child. The approach advises to legalize all foods for your family and to not impose restrictions on your children because all it will do is backfire on you and they will want it more. The book is helpful because it deals with feeding from birth and up, and also shows how one can implement this plan with older children.

If you can ignore the slightly off-putting title, this is an amazing book about developing a healthy and natural attitude towards food. I found this is an insightful and valuable learning tool for parents. It presented a new way of approaching food to me. I already felt that dieting didn't work for adults, but hadn't considered fully embracing that attitude for children too. The open self-regulation works like a dream. Also, the power struggle and stress surrounding food choices is gone. My only minor quibble would be a desire for a little more help about buying food on impulse when out - but the philosophy that is presented has been so helpful to me and quietly transformed my life that I can't recommend it enough!
