1.0 out of 5 stars WATCH OUT! YOU CAN BECOME THE VICTIM OF A SCAM BY RODALE IF YOU DON"T RESUBSCRIBE!!!, January 28, 2009
This review is from: Prevention (1-year) (Magazine)
Think you want to subscribe to Prevention Magazine? Think again. The Rodale Corporation (Rodale, Inc.), which publishes this magazine and others, uses a scam to squeeze money out of unsuspecting consumers who have subscribed to their magazines and then decided not to renew the subscription. After several attempts to send you renewal invoices and other scare tactics, you'll receive a collection notice from the North Shore Collection Agency demanding money and raising the threat of debt delinquency. For most of us, this translates into a tarnished credit report.

Please let your friends, family, co-workers, and other people in your life know about this deceptive scare tactic to fleece money from folks. The North Shore Agency is the subject of lawsuits and under investigation by Attorneys General in various states. To learn more, Google North Shore Agency and magazine subscriptions. You'll learn about this rip-off. Stay informed and be aware of all the other magazines Rodale publishes.

Maybe Amazon will look into this shady practice on behalf of its customers.....

As you can see, its a pretty well-rounded health magazine that is perfect for health-minded individuals. Also recommend The 5-Minute Plantar Fasciitis Solution if you have plantar fasciitis that interferes with your exercise routine.

1.0 out of 5 stars Sad (de)-evolution into a fluff magazine..., September 13, 2003
This review is from: Prevention (1-year) (Magazine)
Back in the 1970's my grandmother subscribed to Prevention. At that time, it was a wonderful magazine, filled with informative articles aimed at the "Prevention" of illness and the promotion of wellness (as the founder of Prevention, J.I. Rodale had preached). Articles about the role of vitamins and nutrition were light years ahead of their time. (J.I. can be given a lot of credit for bringing vitamins and supplements to the mainstream). Over the years, and especially after the tragic death of Robert Rodale (J.I.'s son), and the takeover by his wife and daughter, it has unfortunately transformed into a fluffy, tabloid-like "women's magazine" with scantily clad women on the covers, and one- or two-page articles instructing women to get killer abs and burn the fat. I think J.I. Rodale is probably spinning in his grave to see what his descendents have done to butcher this magazine, which bears NO resemblence whatsoever to what it used to be. I flipped through a copy in disgust recently to note, as another reviewer has stated, plenty of ads for DRUGS which really seems to go against the idea of preventing illness in the first place (whereas the old Prevention sang the praises of vitamins and health foods). I don't know why the Rodale family doesn't just scrap the title and call it something else, but alas, they are a major corporation now and I have little hope that this magazine will improve any time soon.

Readers. Be aware of subscribing to Prevention Magazine unless you want to get your credit ruined by North Shore Collection Agency. I have been trying to cancel the magazine continously and they don't acknowlege it at all. Prevention Magazine (Rodale) will decept you into renewing and if you try to cancel over and over, they will send you a letter from Collection Agency saying that you own them money.

The choice is yours. There are lots of previous subscribers having the same situation. I thought I was the only one. Check "Complaints for Prevention Magazine" on Google.......

1.0 out of 5 stars Sent to Collection Agency After Cancellation of this Magazine!, December 3, 2007
This review is from: Prevention (1-year) (Magazine)

I ordered Prevention Magazine, and did not like it. When I got the bill, I sent a cancellation notice, and got no more of them. Just today I got a notice from a collection agency for the entire subscription amount! I will NEVER order this magazine, and will tell my friends of this experience!

"Risk Free Guarantee
If you find that within the first 90 days of placing an order you are not 100% satisfied - for any reason - let us know and we will gladly give you a full, prompt refund. Any issues you may have received are yours to keep!"

1.0 out of 5 stars Main focus seems to be selling diet books, November 6, 2003
This review is from: Prevention (1-year) (Magazine)
This magazine seems most interested in promoting books, etc. that it has a financial interest in--most notably lately the South Beach Diet. Prevention and it's website are now full of misleading banner ads promoting irresponsible dieting techniques and fads. Too bad, because more than ever nowadays we could use a nice little magazine about nutrition, weight loss, exercise and natural remedies that isn't influenced by it's publishing partners and advertisers. Skip this one, and try Self or Health for a more well-rounded look at women's heath needs.

1.0 out of 5 stars Ads GALORE, not enough content, December 8, 2008
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Prevention (1-year) (Magazine)
I realize every publication has to depend on advertising as well as subscribers to suceed, but Prevention Magazine just has too much advertising. I buy a magazine to read the content, not to get ads stuffed down my throat.

I feel like others that the magazine has changed since I used to read my moms' subscription.

The Jan. 2009 issue has the following: a 24 pg. insert trying to SELL a book, ads for Welches - 2 pg spread, Fruit of the Loom - 1 pg, Chevy - 1 pg, GNC - 1 pg, Robitussin - 1 pg, Alli - 1 pg, (I'm up to only pg. 8), Nature's Path - 1 pg, NyQuil - 1 pg, Spot Shot - a 2 pg spread, Zetia - 4 pg spread, One Touch - 2 pg spread, Splenda - 1 pg, Walmart - 1 pg, Mucinex - 1 pg, Restasis - 2 pg spread, Vicks - 1 pg, Nature's Bounty- 1 pg, truvia - 1 pg, Weight Watchers - spread over 3 pages, Imodium - 1 pg, Spiriva - 4 pg spread, Campbell's - 1 pg, Lipton - 1 pg, Morningstar - 1 pg, another Campbell's -1 pg., Healthy Ones - 1 pg, pg. 78 has 6 ads on one page, AARP - 1 pg, Blue Diamond - 1 pg, Enablex - 4 pg spread.....must I go on only at pg.102 our of 165 pg. magazine? I think you get the idea. If I counted correctly, 45 of the first 102 pages are ads leaving just 57 pages to read. I didn't include the 24 page insert nor the FULL page Prevention ads. If I included their own ads, the ratio would come closer to 50% advertising!

I gave this a 3 month chance and cancelled today!

1.0 out of 5 stars What Happened to the "80's" Prevention with Real Articles??, January 13, 2005
By
booboohead (United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Prevention (1-year) (Magazine)
I started my first subscription to this one in 1980-81. It was EXCELLENT!! It had all kinds of great advice and help on real issues relating to "preventing" ailments/conditions. Now it's a little advertising manual for drug users and fad dieters! Wow...what a change now. I'm not interested in "paying" to read ads. I'll get my motivation and information on more reliable sources. Besides, I got tired of all the little order forms that kept falling out on my lap while I rode the stationery bike! What a waste of trees. :(

4.0 out of 5 stars Tons of Ads, and Little Content, January 9, 2002
This review is from: Prevention (1-year) (Magazine)
This is not my favorite fitness magazine. This is the size of a Reader's Digest, but is packed with ads just like a Beauty Magazine. I find this a bit disappointing considering the breadth of information they tend to cover. They share reasonable and attainable goals, and suggestions for us normal people. The magazine seems to cover a wide age group, with information that is good for both young and old. They do offer recipes, workout suggestions, and much more. The magazine takes little time to read, and seems to only serve as a springboard for more follow up on topics you enjoy. I think this is a better magazine to browse through at the supermarket than to purchase.

4.0 out of 5 stars guilty pleasure, January 14, 2003
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Prevention (1-year) (Magazine)
Prevention is more of a guilty pleasure to me than anything else. It's definitely not a magazine that you file away with your beloved books (I do that with Victoria, Real Simple, and O), but you take a little something from each issue. It does contain a lot of excellent information ranging from herbs to emotional health to physical conditions, but the articles are really more than one or two pages long (at the most) and it doesn't take long to read from cover to cover. Regardless, I enjoy it, and usually learn something new and interesting with each issue. I'm not a complete health nut, but I am interested in long term issues and try to look out for myself. Most health magazines (with the exception of Health) are too specific- each article really only applies to a certain group of people, but most of the articles in Prevention apply to the entire readership as a whole. There's very few of us out there not struggling with stress or interested in ways of preventing heart disease or cancer.
