Book Description

With the upsurge of interest worldwide on the effects of occupational exposure to neurotoxic chemicals, it becomes apparent that neurotoxic illness occurs across a broad spectrum of large and small industries and is associated with both acute and chronic toxic effects, some irreversible. Neurotoxic illness is preventable and there is an urgent need to facilitate transfer of existing information in order to increase awareness amongst health officials, employers and workers and develop effective prevention strategies. Leading international authorities have responded to this need and present here their critical evaluation of research findings from a wide range of clinical reports, epidemiological investigations and experimental studies. To encourage effective prevention strategies they provide a concensus of recommended methods presenting the role of epidemiological and biostatistical methods, an outline of neurological symptoms and signs together with diagnostic and therapeutic strategies. To complete this state-of-the-art volume, critical issues are addressed such as the role of legislation, hygiene standards, engineering controls and materials substitution. By combining the adoption of these broader strategies with the use of valid epidemiological methods and reliable monitoring and surveillance procedures, we can achieve important goals in preventing neurotoxic illness in working populations.

Editorial Reviews

From the Publisher

Unlike so many other health problems, occupational and work-related diseases are almost wholly preventable within existing and foreseeable technologies. This edited volume, published on behalf of the World Health Organization, consolidates and critically evaluates existing information on the neurotoxicity of workplace chemicals. Contributors describe current instrumental and statistical methods and present research findings on worker exposure to organic solvents, metals, agricultural chemicals, noxious gases, irritants, new chemicals, drugs, and chemical interactions. They also discuss the early detection of neurotoxic diseases, and provide standards for the use and testing of human subjects. Diagnosis and treatment methods are described, followed by an analysis of strategies for the prevention of neurotoxic diseases in working populations.
