In soccer refereeing, concepts such as "game control" and "preventive officiating" often come in to play at higher levels of competition among more experienced players, and the title of this book certainly led me to assume that was what this book covered. As an intermediate referee, I was hoping this book would discuss these concepts and help me improve my ability to referee more competitive matches.

Instead, this book is a more elementary overview of the basic laws of the game. It is much like the introductory class referees must take before they are certified. The book is certainly readable (I finished it easily in one sitting), but I can only recommend it for beginner referees (say, with 10 or fewer games in the center). Even then, there are better books (for beginners, "The Referee's Survival Guide", for intermediate to advanced, "For the Good of the Game").

Preventive Officiating is an excellent read for anyone interested in learning the laws of the game as an enjoyable quick read. I've been a coach for 15 years, and now officiate. Randy has created a handbook that is a must read for refs of all levels, and a helpful tool for coaches to learn about the details of how a game is officiated.

I've been a soccer official for 10 years, and I bought this book hoping to add new skills to my repertoire. I think I came away from this book with maybe one or two things I can add to my arsenal. This is a good book, but its geared towards the newer official. What we, the more experience referees, need is a book with real life situations with examples of the game and player management skills used to handle them.

Excellent book for grade 9 and grade 8 referees with 1-4 years experience.

Having just begun my referee career I was thrilled to find out about a book that simplifies the complex process. It was succint and explains the essentials that you need to know. I have known the author as one of the premier ref's and had admired his game calling as a fan. Kudo's to Randy Voight both as a referee and an author. Anyone who wants to enter the soccer world as a referee should definately read the book.

Very helpful for new referees and coaches. The detailed explanations are great, and the "real-life" applications are invaluable. While any ref or coach can recite the "Laws of the Game", Randy Vogt takes it to the next level - making the complex understandable.

Coaches: Buy this book for all the officials who call your games and you will have less to complain about!
