The French know how to make a good thriller. I’ve had the good fortune of seeing dozens of them over the years, and what always impresses me about their particular take on the genre is there’s a firm commitment to balancing the action along with some respectable (though not universal) character development. The formula (so far as I’ve been able to detect) is to take a man or a woman who’s a bit tarnished about the soul, throw them into the middle of a strained set of circumstances, and watch the sparks fly – as much from the gunplay and fisticuffs as they do from crackling dialogue. And, invariably, many of the better French thrillers eventually get discovered by American audiences once they’ve been given the standard ‘Americanized’ remake, which inevitably means more bloat and a bigger budget. For my tastes, I’ll take the original any day of the week over an inferior retread.

Though I’m not presently aware of 2011’s THE PREY being lined up for an American version, I’ve no doubt it may get one someday. It’s exactly the kind of character vehicle Hollywood thespians want their name attached, and it’s story delivers a “root for the underdog” crime drama American audiences love.

(NOTE: The following review will contain minor spoilers necessary solely for the discussion of plot and/or characters. If you’re the type of reader who prefers a review entirely spoiler-free, then I’d encourage you to skip down to the last three paragraphs for my final assessment.

POSITIVE 3 1/2 STARS

ENGLISH DUB IS AVAILABLE ON DVD & BLU RAY VERSIONS. BUT MAY NOT BE ON INSTANT STREAMING VIDEO.

I suggest anyone looking into this movie not put too much weight into reviews (including professional ones) that are overly negative or overly generous. The fact is, it's just a decent thriller with not a lot of spit and polish. Many of the very negative reviews have to due with the lack of English dub on Amazon instant video streaming service. That's not the fault of the movie nor even the Cohen group as far as I know. It's an AMAZON problem. Don't punish the movie! Overly generous reviews laud the simpler, less Hollywood version of a suspense thriller. This is a completely valid virtue of the movie. However, there are a few too many plot holes and convenient story skips for this to warrant five stars. It's just not fair to greater movies we all know exist, including much foreign cinema. But this is a good movie.

THE PLOT: Franck Adrien and members of his crew have gone to prison for robbing a bank. Franck is naturally the robber with a good heart and his motivation had much to do with supporting his gorgeous wife and adorable daughter. His daughter cannot speak because of an undescribed speech impediment. Franck has managed to hide the money from everyone, including his crew, before going to jail and has now served most of his sentence with mere months to go. Unfortunately for Franck, everyone seems to know he has the money and everyone wants it. Franck appears to have the worst luck in prison and is constantly at odds with a past crew member, a prison guard, and Russian Mafia types. Through a series of prison fights, he ends up having his sentence extended.

Is to protect your kids. This superbly crafted French film follows the path of others such as "Spiral" and "Tell No One". It may not be an original plot, but it is so well written, acted, and directed - right down to the end credits that match the actor to the face so you see who is who - its a first rate thriller. If the last line doesn't send an arrow of love and hope through your heart, you're doomed. Not to be missed.

listening to French while moved up and down on a walking machine, it's an enjoyable pick.

Yet, the plot is not so fabulous and the development of each major character not fine and deep. And in the last part, when Frank struggling on the bush down along the cliff and then got shot by a old mountain dweller seems to me difficult to fit in the movie.
