Smitley definitely demonstrates his vast law enforcement experience in his second novel, Prey. Readers join Alan Shear, a California native, who is down on his luck as he takes on a case that is completely out of his league in order to run away from his own personal demons. Set in a remote town in Idaho, Smitley's writing style immerses the readers in the beauty and dangers of the wilderness. The vast cast of characters comes to life while Shear searches for the answers to a thirty-five year old murder and nearly becomes a statistic himself.
