Great Multiplayer, solo mission a bit short but good,

I haven't played an FPS in a while and when I had some free time I downloaded the trial and what sold me was the multiplayer which you can play for free. The demo had 2 MP maps but the full version has 12. Most of the MP maps are 5 star. The only downside is finding a multiplayer game online is discouraging but findable. Usually there are a few people playing but when there is not I join a server then in a minute or two people start joining. Makes you think people are ot playing but they will join soon. the solo mission is really good. the demo of the solo mission has a lot of cut scenes and the levels seem small but once you get past that point on the full version there are some very clever map puzzles to figure out. It could be a bit longer on the SP.

I am using Aspyr'sPrey with a MacPro and OS 10.5.2. Unfortunately, the game is unresponsive to keyboard commands which pretty much makes the game useless as soon as you progress a level or two. Their technical support has been disappointing. I don't know if they have had other reports of this nature or whether the problem is limited to just my computer or computers of my type.

Loved the game--good graphics, nice innovations, nice weapons, ran smoothly on Mac. I like the option of turning off cursing.
But let's look at this from another perspective: the representation of Native Americans is just silly. It's as full of new-age stereotypes as you can get. It's supposed to be Cherokee, but Grandfather Obi-Wan "You must embrace your heritage"-Kenobi hangs out in saloons (where he continues to preach "you must embrace your heritage!") wearing full-blown 1800s regalia. Until he is killed by the aliens--in the middle of a "you must embrace your heritage" sermon. And the "Cherokee homelands" is a rocky desert covered in petroglyphs. Oh, and your girlfriend in the game prays to "Uniqua", which--I swear I am not making this up--is a character from "The Bakyardigans" kid's show. Really. And don't get me started on the "HEY-ya-ya-ya" chants and drums while Tommy "Spirit walks" with his hawk "spirit animal." Okay, it's a cool game, but did they get their ideas about Indians from geocities new-age websites?

It's just an awesome game. Walking on walls and ceilings, it just worked. Can get a bit gory tho. Kinda like Doom 3.
I tried the demo and liked it pretty well and then decided to buy it and was very happy I did. It played great with my upgraded G-4's, a Sawtooth and DA. I can't remember if I first played it with 10.3 or 10.4 but didn't have an issue either way. I guess the "integrated" (shared video ram) video chips aren't supported. I'll find out how it does on my new Mac Pro with 10.6 on it one of these days. I haven't done the online multiplayer but the single player I thought was great. It had fresh ideas on how to do a FPS game. Instead of just going room to room you can walk on walls and ceilings and shooting at people on the floor. It was a bit overwhelming sometimes. You literally had to look 360 degrees as the walls and ceilings had doors and openings also. You could almost get motion sickness from being disorientated. You could get lost real quick. The puzzle rooms can be hard sometimes as you are in a room with four walls and have to access a door on the opposite wall with big machines, boxes etc, moving with you as the room turns upside down with normal gravity. So you can get disorientated and lose which way you came from if you don't pay attention to detail. It's definitely not going to be a fast game even with a walk through.

This is an outstanding gem of a game. Loaded with all kinds of neat stuff, Even Art Bell is heard from. The multi-dimensional wall-walking is incredible and the graphics are just stunning. The general plot gets a creative A+ from me. I have Quake 4, Doom 3, Wolfenstein, all the Call of Duties and etc., and this is my favorite. Runs great on my early '08' Macbook Pro 2.5 Ghz Core 2 duo. I'm a little puzzled that the price is less than other similar games like my others. Prey is worth a premium. I think/hope there will be a sequel....

I'm a big FPS player. I try and get my hands on anything new and innovative that comes along. For awhile now, I've heard of Prey and it's great reviews. However, I never got the time to sit down try it until recently. So what are my feelings on this game? Kinda mixed really. On the up side, the music, voice acting, and presentation is overall great. The little additions such as the spirit world and Native American influences adds new breath into the FPS genre. However, the actual gameplay is kinda a let down. The weapons, though unique in design, is pretty average at best. Nothing really new here and there. The maps take place in the space ship so you're pretty much in enclosed environments all the time. There are few "unique" scenes such as stepping into different worlds or objects that releases the monotony, but not very much. I played a bit and eventually focused my time into other games. =\ It's not to say that this is a bad game. In fact, I think it's quite good. The unique atmosphere, gun designs, and story telling are all top notch. It's just the case of, "Been there, done that..."

Great game, great graphics, nice soundtrack, liked the native American element, highly immersive environment. I would highly recommended it. Boyfriend LOVED it, a little bloody and graphic for me.

This is the best-looking (and sounding) game I know of for Mac, and the wallwalking etc. make it a great change from generic repetitive shooters like Doom. It's still just a shooter, with a linear plot, but it's the best of the genre you can get today. Multiplayer is fun too if you can find opponents. I wish there were more of it--hopefully Prey 2 will come to Mac as well.

Stunning graphics. Interesting game play. Even a story. The best thing about Prey, besides the awesome graphics, has to be the gravity flipping and portal confusion. Adds a new dimension to 3D First Person Shooters. The weapons are cool and blow up and/or disintegrate your enemies in different ways. The enemy adapts to your level. If you are a new gamer, it goes easy on you. If you're a pro, watch out.
The only problem, is that it seems as though the developers were in a hurry to finish the game. Some of the levels seem to look the same. There hasn't been an update for the game at all, though I haven't had any problems with it (up to Mac standards). The most disappointing thing is that not enough people play multiplayer, and there aren't many multiplayer maps to begin with. This may be only because of the steep system requirements vs. the overall popularity of the game amongst people with fast computers (gamers). Overall, if you're looking for a new 3d FPS game to play, and if you're old like me and loved the old Duke Nukem 3d games, this game is for you. It has that 3d Realms old-school humor that you can get a kick out of once again. |
