Well, looks like nobody else wants to review this excellent new album (people must be too busy buying their Good Charlotte, Evanescence or Maroon 5 albums!!), so I will. If you're unaware of Tiamat, don't read the in-house description on this site: yes, the band is Swedish. They are NOT "symphonic" or "death metal." What they are is a band quite similar to other gothic-ish groups like Paradise Lost or Lacuna Coil. This album doesn't tread any new ground, playing it rather safe in the composition department, but is thankfully darker and therefore more satisfying than their last, too-light offering "Judas Christ". At first I found the album sort of predictable and safe within its gothic-metal framework, but upon many subsequent listens, I find it a very cohesive and pleasing work, the songs all flowing nicely into one another, several featuring some nice female vocal duets. The band's long-standing Pink Floyd influences are also not as strong on this release, at least until the final tune. And with each release, leader and singer Johan Edlund's deep baritone vocal stylings are getting much more palatable, and now actually fit quite well within the songs' moods, whereas previously I found his voice to actually take away from all the great material on earlier albums like "A Deeper Kind of Slumber". Final assessment: if you're a Tiamat fan, this is one of their best. If you're not aware of this band, but like melodic gothic metal like Lacuna Coil or Type O, try these guys out! You won't be disappointed. Another well-kept secret that most American music fans probably won't hear about.

This is a great album. I have read far too many bad reviews of Tiamat's later albums. Some people like Tiamat's early work and some judge all their albums on the Wildhoney scale but do to so is unfair to a growing band. Would I agree that Judas Christ was not one of their best? Sure but I have heard a lot worse from praised bands. Prey in my opinion is one of their best. You have to be an open minded listener and understand the transition in Tiamat from dark metal to gothic. This album is just plain beautiful. I could not find one song that I do not like. This CD has been in my car player unremoved for 2 months. Yes I like it that much. Tiamat is a good band if you are looking for a good gothic band. Edlund's vocals go well with the music and the songs never really get tiresome. As the previous reviewer said, if you like Lacuna Coil then you should love Tiamat. Do yourself a favor and judge for yourself. Most of the critics out there are a part of the reason that this band doesn't get the attention it deserves. i think after trying them out you will figure out just how wrong the critics are.

Johan Edlund's got the kind of voice that just leaves you breathless & staring into the empty air. Truly enchanting & catchy melodies, with euphoric synth sections, adrenalinic & slow bass playing & hypnotising drum beats. Pentagram is a very Pink Floydish
song, reminiscent of Echoes. Overall the album has got a very spiritual zen touch to it. Amazing stuff to listen to in the Swedish nature ( probably the phenomena that gave birth to this music) and synchronises splendidly well in general with woodlands in summertime/ bees buzzing birds singing sunlight filtered through the canopy/ the album has also caught the spirit of the sea at sunset.
Tiamat makes you FEEL like few other bands, awakens your senses, makes your perceptions sensitive, makes the beautiful almost painfully beautiful.

I truly recommend this album. It is so melodic and beautiful. Each sond is different from the other and this is what I love so much about it. I highly recommend it!

If you like doom metal or even metal in general or maybe even aren't a fan of metal, you must listen to this album!!! This is one of the best composed, well written, strongest sounding albums I've ever heard! This is the definition of atmospheric doom metal. Johan's vocals are mesmerizing, the songs have deep emotional and atmospherics in them. It truly takes you to another world. Truly one of the best albums ever made!

With Prey, Tiamat secure their position as legends in the gothic music scene. Pretty much everything you want in a gothic album is here: depressing riffs, angst ridden vocals and an overall sense of despair. The reason I can't give this 5 stars is the inconsistency of the quality. You have some really good songs like cain, and carry your cross and I'll carry mine. Then you some not so good songs like a couple toward the end. Then you have the just plain strange like pentagram and wings of heaven. Fans of the genre will enjoy this album and even non fans can appreciate the originality of it. 4 out of 5 stars
