If you have ever heard of the diamond trade, you just might want to take a look at this book. Unknown & untaxed jeweler shops abound in apartments in NYC and they are the backdrop for this story. While it is the screenplay of the movie, I wanted to see how closely the movie followed the script and it does. At first look, it seems a tidy little story but there ae some undertones that belie that. The Orthodox Hasidic Jewish community in NYC is close-knit and family oriented, with the men in charge. Sonia finds she cannot accept this patriarchal world and, with her keen eye for quality, decides to work in the family diamond business where she achieves great success, endures rape by her brother-in-law, discovers an unknown Puerto Rican jewelry maker, has an affair w/him but loses her marriage & child in the offing. The dialogue is particularly skillful & riveting and, thus, the screenplay is well worth the read. Special attention paid to an exchange between the Rebbi and Sonia is worth reading twice, as well as the exchange w/the deceased Rebbi's wife.

This is not a book just for women or just for men. It is, however, one both can learn from and it's a darn good read while you're at it!
