Book Description

March 15, 2010
Harriet Wynter was, in her time, doyenne of the antique scientific instrument trade, and this is her story. Forced to make a living as a single parent - at a time when being a working mother was looked at askance by society - she bravely, and ultimately successfully, set up in business as an antiques dealer.   She at first specialised in porcelain, but fell in love with the complexity and beauty of those articles of utility which are known as scientific instruments. Co-author of one of the first books on this fascinating subject, her life is told with the verve and panache which it deserves. q

5.0 out of 5 stars The Price of Everythinge by Harriet Wynter, January 29, 2012
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: The Price Of Every Thinge (Paperback)
The Price of Everythinge' by Harriet Wynter is twenty chapters of total entertainment and a journey through the fascinating life of an antique dealer. We read of the early struggles to survive as a single mother with two sons and a business to build. Through perseverance, sense of humour especially during the setbacks and characteristic raciness of style Harriet unfolds her experiences often funny and sometimes desperate..

Harriet charts her life from her first shop in Brighton, making occasional forays into Paris with her car loaded to the gunnels under the eagle eye of Madame Petit, and maybe un peu exploited!

Harriet's passion for porcelain moves into scientific instruments of which she becomes expert writing books and lecturing. Whether you are a professional in the antique trade or merely a layman gaining enjoyment through antiques, you will be well rewarded by this stimulating read. The narrative flows naturally and absorbs the reader with well selected anecdotes.

As a footnote, do enjoy the chapters on `fakes and forgeries' and advice on how to start an Antique business - all well written with verve and wit.
