Book Description

February 2008
Nice guys often finish last. In this lecture, John Bradshaw exposes the hidden and frequently destructive forces behind the facade of being the "nice guy". Here, he explains how such behavior can destroy relationships and intimacy by never being honestly connected with others. Finally, Bradshaw offers practical insights into how listeners can learn to be kindly but firmly direct about how they feel, and find that place in their lives where they can be who they really are. Editorial Reviews

From AudioFile

Bradshaw, the famed family and recovery therapist, gives a live lecture on the costs of being too nice. He says that not being true to your own heart can exact a high cost to your soul. Despite his joviality and comfortable style, the lack of introduction and abrupt ends of sides, almost in mid-sentence, are jarring. A small amount of music or a transition phrase would make this good speaker more pleasant to listen to. This two-tape package brings you another Bradshaw workshop that shines with John's humor, wit, and insight. John shares, in a warm and personal style, his insight about the cost and danger of being "super-nice" while sacrificing being real in life. John points out that the articifially super-nice persona prevents genuine intimacy and sharing.

I highly recommend this set of tapes if you want more insight into being real in your life.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Price of Nice, November 8, 2002

This review is from: The Price of Nice (Audio Cassette)
This audiotape was just so enlightening to our whole family. It was like "WOW" this is us exactly. After recently experiencing a Family Week at The Meadows where we also experienced an awakening about feelings and how important it is to "feel"in order to be your real self and have intimate relationships. This tape reinforced all of this information and then even more to help a person become who he really is. I only wish I had had this information before I had my family. Unfortunately, sometimes it takes a family crisis before you really look at the dysfunctions in a family that goes from generation to generation. I will share these tapes with everyone I come in contact with. John Bradshaw did an excellent job - I also enjoyed the humor he used.

4.0 out of 5 stars The Price of Nice, April 7, 2007
This review is from: The Price of Nice (Audio Cassette)
This two tape series is an excellent resource to help the reader begin to understand how toxic and potentially dangerous a person who is, on most levels, "too nice" can be. Ministers, counselors, therapists and anyone in the helping professions could gain much understanding from the material found herein. The problem with being overly nice is that it is a mask for stored internal rage and it is, at the same time, rage producing.
