Addendum: I'm now on my third batch of these things. I've looked around the internet but have not found a better quality compass for the money. At the time I purchased these they were a little less than $40 for 50 units. They're actually pretty darn accurate. I typically leave them as geocaching trade items. I recently conducted an intro to orienteering event in the Hoosier National forest. I made up around twenty laminated topo maps, and taped one of these (in the little baggies) to each map. Every participant was able to accurately hit the waypoints using the maps and these compasses. After this third batch is gone I'm sure I'll be getting a fourth.
Thanks for a really decent product at a very reasonable price!
One thing I didn't much like is that the pointer tip is black and the face is black, so in certain lights, it is hard to read. It really should be a contrasting color. I can't imagine red or green paint cost any more than black paint.
Let's be honest: you really can't expect a seventy-cent compass to save your butt if you're list in a canyon or forest. If you're expecting that, you're going to be disappointed. Don't skimp on tools that important. But to teach a bunch of 7 and 8 year-olds about cardinal directions, basic map-reading, and the concept of magnetic north? These are just fine. I needed a large number of compasses for that purpose, and since the money was coming out of my own pocket, I needed affordable. This fit the bill.
As for the seller, shipping was fast and the company followed up to make sure we were satisfied with the transaction and product. When we need more, I'll re-order from this seller.

Actually works, its is a little larger than what I expected. The profile is thick 1/8th+ in order to permit the needle room to rotate.Published on January 27, 2010 by RECN
