Book Description

October 23, 2001
The terrorist attack on Flight 103 over Lockerbie, Scotland, killed 270 people and remains the largest mass death in peacetime of Americans abroad. In a compelling and powerful narrative, THE PRICE OF TERROR chronicles one man's impassioned search for justice for the victims' families in a court of law - a story that goes far beyond the recent trial of two Libyan agents accused of planting the bomb. Former diplomat and prosecutor of nazi war criminals, Allan Gerson took the case, paving the way for US citizens to hold foreign governments accountable for terrorist acts. Despite opposition from within Washington DC (in the face of a public outcry that the suspects be turned over for trial) and even from some of the victims' familes, he fought with a bulldog tenacity and emotions on fire. Now on the brink of securing a landmark settlement from the Libyan government, co-authors Allan Gerson and Jerry Adler tell a gripping story that will keep readers up nights, cataloguing the grief and loss that demand restitution, and raising provocative questions about accountability, deterrence and blame. Together, they demonstrate how this case may revolutionise justice in the coming century, by putting accountability in the hands of private citizens.

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

In The Price of Terror: Lessons of Lockerbie for a World on the Brink, Allan Gerson, a former prosecutor of Nazi war crimes, currently a professor of international relations at George Washington University, and Jerry Adler (High Rise), a senior editor at Newsweek, reconstruct the struggle for justice for the bomb victims and their families after the 1988 terrorist bombing of Pan Am flight 103 over Lockerbie, Scotland. Gerson, an expert in international law, took up the cause of pursuing the Libyan suspects, even when the U.S. government did little and lawyers told the victims' families that there was no precedent for suing Libya. Gerson and Adler track the tragedy from the moment the bomb exploded, killing 270, through the trial in Scotland. In the aftermath of September 11, this timely account of the legal, political and emotional aftermath of international mass murder will be of interest to many. Photos.

4.0 out of 5 stars Price of Terror, March 13, 2002
This review is from: The Price of Terror (Hardcover)
This book tells the story of the long search for justice by the families of the victims of Pan Am flight 103 destroyed over Lockerbie, Scotland in December 1988. It makes for compelling reading, most especially in the aftermath of the 1 September 2001 terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon. The authors describe, often in numbing detail, the prolonged efforts of the relatives of those killed in the Pan Am 103 terrorist attack to bring to justice the perpetrators of the single most catastrophic terrorist attack on American civilians to that time. Focusing on the bureaucratic and legal aftermath of the attack, the authors paint a frustrating picture of the often convoluted nature of the American legal and political systems. In so doing, they provide a sobering roadmap and a bitter foretaste of what many of the victims of 1 September 2001 have in their future.

5.0 out of 5 stars everyone needs to read this, November 15, 2001

This review is from: The Price of Terror (Hardcover)
This is an amazing book! The authors tell the story of the Pan Am 103 tragedy with sensitivity and intelligence, detailing the unfolding events in a particular time-sequenced pace that is as riveting and vivid as any film or painting. The families' expression of grief through art and self-sacrifice, and the authors' untiring search for justice over 12 years are the human elements that make this story immensely fascinating. "The Price of Terror" chronicles modern terorism and puts it into historical perspective, and the courage and spirit of these people make this a book not to be missed. Everyone needs to read this!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars The Price of Terror: A valuable lesson, November 12, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: The Price of Terror (Hardcover)
Adler and Gerson have crafted a compelling tale that investigates the wake of horrors left by the crash of Pan Am 103. It is never less than riveting in its fluid writing style and compassionate exploration of the travails of the victims' families. Gerson is obviously a committed and passionate advocate for the rights of victims of terrorism, and Adler, a well-known figure at Newsweek, has written with his usual flair for interweaving the telling personal details that make the story come vibrantly to life. The writing is vivid and the story gripping. This book stands out in a crowd of recent works about terrorism that have been rushed to market after September 11.
