4.0 out of 5 stars The "Price" is Right.
Kelly Price's third CD was delayed for at least a year before it was finally released, and I'm happy to report that it's worth the wait. It's usually not a good sign when an album gets pushed back as frequently as "Priceless" did, but you can breathe easy that Kelly hasn't lost her groove. Kelly Price's third CD was delayed for at least a year before it was finally released, and I'm happy to report that it's worth the wait. It's usually not a good sign when an album gets pushed back as frequently as "Priceless" did, but you can breathe easy that Kelly hasn't lost her groove. The album not only represents a mature step forward, but she's clearly grown more confident and self assured since her 1998 debut "Soul of a Woman." What's more, she co-wrote the majority of the tracks and serves as executive producer on the album. Her gospel-flavored voice glides through ace cuts like the emotional "He Proposed," the showstopper "I Live Here Now," and her battle of the pipes with Faith Evans in "Sister." But the track that had me raise my eyebrows is "Again," a Latin-flavored jam that features guitar from Eric Clapton, whose playing blends nicely into the song. Ever since Price made a guest appearance on Whitney Houston's single "Heartbreak Hotel," her career has been moving in the right direction and is one of r&b's most respected young singers. The Price is right.

3.0 out of 5 stars I Miss My " Big " Kelly, January 23, 2004

I applaud Kelly for losing weight because most of us know it is hard work. But I can't help notice that Kelly's songs were better on her previous albums. Before Kelly sang with more heart and for some reason the songs were deeper. I don't know if emotional struggles had anything to do with it but I could connect with Kelly better before she changed. I feel like she not only changed her looks but changed her way of singing. She was always a beautiful woman with the voice of an angel. I will continue to buy her albums. I don't have THAT much of a problem with Priceless but I expected a lot more from Kelly. This album...well I just wasn't feeling it the way I felt her other songs. I didn't hear anyone talking about it. I don't know how it did on the charts. I wish Kelly the best and I will always be a fan. But I notice that when artists lose weight or change their looks their songs seem to change too. I saw this with Luther too. Once he lost all that weight he didn't seem like the same singer we all knew and loved. I think adjusting to someone's new look is hard when a new album accompanies that. It's like the public doesn't get a chance to get used to the new persona so the new album is just too weird to get into. I don't know if other people notice that but it seems that once someone looks a certain way, they don't put all the heart into the songs they sing from that point on. I hope Kelly's next album is a big hit and I hope it provides the old talent she had when she was larger ( even if she stays the same ).

5.0 out of 5 stars CD should not have been slept on, November 5, 2003

This is Price's best CD and it did not get promoted well. I'm a huge fan of Price and I'm really glad I bought this CD. Price has a strong voice. A real voice, a voice that sounds even better Live. The one low point on this CD was her collaberation with Keith Murray. Aside of that I liked almost all the songs on this CD.

2. Someday - nice gospel sounding CD
5. Sisters - Beautiful song with Faith Evans
6. Again - nice song with some Latino guitar flavor
8. Strong Man - very, very, nice song. One I play a lot reminds me of my man. :)

#7 is a nice lude with very nice music that would have made a nice full song.

9. How does it feel - Price really shocases her voice on this song.

This CD is just awesome.

5.0 out of 5 stars The voice alone is untouchable!, May 2, 2003

I am so excited that this CD is finally released. Like many of the other reviews state, I to have been waiting for this release since June 2002. Kelly Price has always been given the shaft in regards to promotion and air play. Maybe it is because she doen's look like record label execs expect her to, but it can not be denied that Kelly Price definitely stands at the front of the female R&B spot. It is almost like hearing that woman in church that everyone wants to hear sing...Kelly's voice just moves you.

This album is no different that the others. Her voice alone makes it worth the wait and the money that the CD would cost. There really is not much flare to this album (two interludes that really could have been left off), but track after track you realize that like this album tag states, her voice seems effortles, the songs are timeless and the album in priceless!

Kelly is definitely at her best when she sings about issues that are personally close to her heart. The stand out "Strong Man" is proof positive that the girl can sing and "Sister" a duet with another R&B great, Faith Evans is a smooth as a Sunday Jazz Brunch. Kelly definitely shines on her ballads. Ms. Price also offers some up-tempo records that are good as well. In great Kelly Price style she doesn't forget to thank the one who gave her her gifts. This album's attempt is "You Brought the Sunshine," which if you are a true Gospel music fan, you would know that this Clark sister's classic is a very hard undertaking. Not only does Kelly take this challenge, she goes way beyond and vocally reaches to the heavens. Did I mention that the Clark sister's join her on the record? Yeah, priceless.

Overall this CD, although it was not promoted like a singer like Kelly Price deserves, will put all other releases this year to shame. If not in album sales, in vocal truth.

5.0 out of 5 stars Hot, Soulful, and Confident Album, April 29, 2003

Confident and soulful best desribe Kelly's latest release. She is in control and self-assured on this set. Maybe it was the weightloss or the success of her second album, but this time around she is not "begging him to stay" or "confronting someone who [took] her man." On this set, she is letting him and the world know that you should not have to settle. The songs are soulful and mostly mid-tempo. She is also suprisingly reserved on this set. She wrote, produced, and arranged most of the tracks and the girl has mad skills. The arrangements are well-organized to flow beneath her voice and the lyrics are deeper that on her previous releases. This is clearly her best album to date and I hope that she gets the recognition that she deserves. This is true R&B. Don't sleep on this one.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Subtle But Notable Change in the Right Direction- Her Best, June 13, 2003

Kelly Price has had some troubles releasing this CD. It was supposed to come out several times before but due to several factors like lack of adequate promotion and radio not responding, the CD was constantly delayed. Finally, after some reaction to HE PROPOSED (1 of the best cuts on the CD), the CD was released. Compared to Kelly's previous efforts, this release is better. It is not the run-of the mill, tried and true formulaic R&B. There are many new elements incorporated into this soulful piece which makes it that much better.

INTROLUDE (PRICEY BUNCH)- This intro begins very strongly preparing us for a phenomenal song after this and a great disc overall. There are many tones of Gospel here. A-

SOMEDAY- 2nd single that did not make too much noise; nonetheless, it is a very uplifting, positive song that is needed in so many communities (to face the fact that with perseverence, one can make it someday). A-

yOU MAKE ME FEEL- Catchy, busy song that initially sounds like the same old R&B midtempo. Fortunately, it is not just that. There is a unique beat here with a little Latin flavor. A nice summerish, breezy song. A-

TAKE IT TO THE HEAD- Rapper Keith Murray makes an appearance here in this satisfactory song. There is nothing really special about it except for Kelly going down the hip/hop road. B+

SISTER- Costar of the HEARTBREAK HOTEL hit of 1998 with Whitney Houston, Faith Evans makes an appearance. The song has a once again positive, hopeful encouraging message. The two complement one another well but the song did not go where I thought it would. However, this slow to midtempo joint is pretty hot. B+

AGAIN- Kelly has three guest appearances in a row. Here, we get not only Kelly speaking some Spanish but a wonderful guitar performance from the well respected and popular ERIC CLAPTON. The song has some nice flavor with its Latin undertones. It is nice to see Kelly trying something a little new and different. A-

PRICELESS (INTERLUDE)- Very creative, James Bond like skit. A

STRONG MAN- I am sorry but I do not know who Jeff in C Minor is but he guests on this hot joint. In the vein of Angie Stone's BROTHA, this encouraging midtempo is well executed by Kelly who just puts so much into the song. It is arranged well and has a nice climax. One of the strongest cuts on the disc. A

HOW DOES IT FEEL (MARRIED yOUR GIRL)- 1st single that just talks about being taken by someone else when one should be in that place. The song is a hot midtempo and very creative. Another nice try for Kelly. It should have done much better at radio. A

hE PROPOSED- 3rd and current single which is one of those heartfelt, sentimental ballads. I do not know why radio is not responding better but this is a jam. I know many, men and women, could relate whether having gotten married or looking forward to in whatever way, this song is very positive and very rare. I am surprised that Kelly tackled this cut but I am glad that she did. Watch for the end where she just lets loose. A+

SO SWEET- One of my favorite tracks, produced by RAPHAEL SADDIQ, this neosoul jam in the vein of STRONG MAN, is one of those cool laidback but powerful cuts that can certainly get someone in the mood for something sweet after having gotten married to hE PROPOSED. I like towards the end where the song is just broken down in so many wayss: standout. A

WHATCHA GONNA DO- Laidback but good beat. It has kind of a weird message. I am tired of Kelly recklessly singing about cheating or someone wishing that they were with her. Just give us some loving joints. Otherwise, the song works though it is not a standout. B+

I LIVE HERE NOW- This is also one of those neo-soul cuts that has Kelly once again talking about taking the place of someone else. The vintage but also fresh joint has a really cool beat. I like the portions where the drums come in followed by the synthesizers. One of the coolest tracks. A-

GIRLFRIEND- Conventional R&B track that has no spark to it. It has a kinda jazzy vibe but there is nothing special to it. B

IF- The disc stalls toward the end obviously. This slow, boring song is no standout. This is something that we have heard so much- the arrangements and all. I really pay no attention to this. B-

BACK IN THE DAY- Kelly's children, Jonia and Jeff, make an appearnce here. The song that recalls the olden days of which I know nothing of seriously but can help one to either visualize or reminisce. A very positive song with a Frankie Beverly & Maze beat. B+

I STILL DO- Kelly sang backup for Mariah before she made her debut. This song of all the ones Kelly has recorded sounds the most poppish like something that Mariah, Patti LaBelle or Celine would do. It is nice to see Kelly tackle a ballad in a fresh manner although this balladry style overall is not fresh, it is for Kelly. B+

YOU BROUGHT THE SUNSHINE- Kelly is definitely not afraind to proclaim the name of God. She also definitely had some pull to get Gospel extraordinaires, Clark Sisters, to guest appear on this track. I remember them when I was a toddler because my mother woudl always listen to them back in the mid-80s and they sound just as good as if not better than they did back then. It can also be noted that they are an influence of Kelly because she sounds just like them. It is hard to differentiate. DORINDA CLARK-COLE who is making some ends on the Gospel front is here as well as KAREN CLARK SHEARD (relatively famous solo Gospel artist) and the other 2 sisters. A praise joint to the ONE AND ONLY GOD. It is a nice mix. A+

Overall, Kelly ventures away from the formulaic music of before which is great because that is what is going to get her exposed to a mainstream and more public audience. The best thing is that this change is not too abrupt because the soul is definitely still there. If only radio and video would respond better, Kelly could garner some major commercial attention for this CD which is her best thus far.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not "Priceless", May 9, 2003

I must say that this CD is OK. It is not Kelly's best and after waiting sooo long for this CD to be released, I am a little disappointed. It's not as strong as I thought it would be, but I have to give it to Kelly. She has one of the best and strongest voices out there today.

5.0 out of 5 stars WORTH WAITING FOR..., April 30, 2003
By
This review is from: Priceless (Audio CD)
When I say 'waiting' I mean it! This album, believe it or not, was orginally suppose to be released June 25th, 2002. After a dozen delays and almost a year later, Kelly finally returns with her latest R&B masterpiece. I just get chills listening to Kelly's voice. So soulful, and so effortless. R&B girls may be a dime a dozen, but Kelly is definitely one in a million. The new track added (and not featured on the Amazon.com track listing for this cd) is the Jam & Lewis produced 'Strong Man.' Like all of Kelly's songs, it's brilliant. The latin guitar laced 'Again' featuring Eric Clapton, is just flat out breath taking. So, what has Kelly done different with this album? More hip-hop mixed with her unmatchable, naturally soulful R&B. The results are truly stunning. I bought this cd the first day it was on store shelves. And I don't regret it for a minute! Make this investment and neither will you, guaranteed!

3.0 out of 5 stars Solid, but not her best, April 30, 2003

Compared to most other R&B efforts, Priceless shines. Price masterfully blends old school beat with modern styles to fashion a nice album. Three songs that stand out are "Sister" with Faith Evans, "Again", and "Back in the Day"
But compare to her last two albums, this effort seems sub-par. Kelly seems to scream more than sing, and none of the song are as excetional as her previous efforts.
R&B fans will love it. Kelly Price fans will feel unfulfilled.
