Great surprise!,

This review is from: Priceless: A Novel (Hardcover)
Charlotte is your typical socialite we all read about in the papers who have spoiled lives and live to shop and party. Charlotte's mother died when she was seven and only has her father, who gives her the world but is never around. Charlotte is back in New York after her father sent her to Paris for a year because she burned down a building at Yale. There was nothing her father couldn't make go away by throwing money at the situation.Just as Charlotte is getting back to life in New York she discovers that her father has been arrested for embezzlement and fraud. Charlotte quickly becomes a target for all the people her father allegedly stole from and finds that someone wants to kill her in order to make her father pay. Everything moves quickly as the FBI freezes her accounts and begins to seize everything they own. With no family other than her father and the city becoming hostile she decides to go to New Orleans to find her former nanny Millie. Millie lives in New Orleans with her grown son Jackson who despises Charlotte since Millie left him as a young boy to be Charlotte's nanny. New Orleans allows Charlotte a fresh start but things do not come easy. When she goes to sell a few of her clothes she meets Kat an eccentric fashionista who quickly becomes her friend. Kat even helps Charlotte find a job in her dad's restaurant. Only Charlotte realizes that shopping and partying have not made her a very skillful worker and ends up washing dishes. When Kat finds out that Charlotte can sing Kat takes her to a jazz club and announces that Charlotte will be singing. An amusing twist of fate puts Charlotte on stage with Millie's son Jackson. Charlotte surprises everyone with her talents and Jackson is forced to see her in a new light. Life would be good if it wasn't for Charlotte's stalker who followed her to New Orleans and is sending her threatening messages about how he plans to kill her. Charlotte begins to play with Jackson's band and finds that she loves being on stage. With Jackson and Charlotte as a team they find a combination of work and love that the music scene can't ignore and they are quickly requested in Hollywood. Only where ever Charlotte goes her stalker isn't far behind and is determined to kill her. While in Los Angeles Charlotte finds out that she could return to her old life or find her own path. I found Priceless to be a great book. I really liked the character development and how Charlotte grows from beginning to end. Aside from Charlotte one of my favorite characters was Kat and I can really see a book based on her character. The only faults I found were a few phrases that I felt were jumbled and I had to reread a few sentences to figure out what the characters meant. I also wish we had seen some closer with her father but like in life not everything gets wrapped up in a pretty little bow. I also can see this being turned into a movie and would recommend this book to all!

I know what you're thinking. You scan the cover and make a face when the name "Nicole Richie" catches your eye. "The former celebutante and Paris Hilton BFF? What's SHE written that's worth reading?" Priceless, of course. This fluffy and fun slice of Chick lit tells the riches to rags story of Charlotte Williams, a spoiled socialite who falls from grace after her wealthy father pleads guilty to Wall Street fraud charges. The Park Avenue girl used to be handed everything on a silver platter loses it all and must learn to grow up and make her own way in the world after escaping to the New Orleans home of her former nanny. Yeah, it's cliched, but that's part of it's charm. There's comedy, drama, and some romance thrown in for good measure. Charlotte's transformation from a bratty, entitled diva to a more mature young woman finding her voice is enjoyable and well written. The other characters are engaging as well. Kudos to Nicole for a fun, tongue in cheek summer read. Don't skip it!

I'm completely surprised the reviews that this book got. It was horrible. I do like Nicole Richie so to me it's not the celebrity reason I disliked it. I found Charlotte extremely hard to like and feel sorry for her. Did she really think she struggled? She traded in some of her fashion clothes for more designer duds?! What?! She should be buying her clothes at Goodwill so she has money to eat. Or doesn't she eat? Since for much of the book we had to hear how skinny, goergous and sexy she was.And come on. Do you really think that that many people would give her such a hard time about what her father did? Really? The comments on the webpage about her sucking were just way over the top. It was utterly ridiculus. Most of it it sexual reference. No wonder this girl has such a huge ego. Do you really think that police in New Orleans would be waiting on the sidelines for someone to make their move on her when she was singing at the club. Death threats or not. There just wasn't enough there for them to spend the time waiting. Nothing against Richie. But I really don't think she could relate at all to what she expected her character to feel because she no doubt hasn't experienced that herself.

Good old days,
By
This review is from: Priceless: A Novel (Hardcover)
I have been reading for many years and the book Priceless actually reminded me of the good old days in the 1980's where books of this type and genre were extremely popular and alot of fun to read.Actually Priceless is about money, greed, ambition, reality check and making the best out of a bad situation. It is loaded with amusing anecdotes which you just know the author, Nicole Richie, has actually exprienced either first hand or some other way as the descriptinons are way to vivid and detailed to be "made up". This novel is about the glitz and how easily it can all come outdone - although it truly is alot of fun to read about. I love reading about the excesses of the rich and I love to read about their undoing - fun! fun! The story centers around a rich "brat" - Charlotte who in a matter of hours/days becomes an outcast with no money and nowhere to go. She moves in with her "former" nanny and discovers that she has no skills to do anything and while this is disconverting it does not stop her. She meets a friend and a man - both of whom may or may not be saviors - which adds to the fun of the read. I thought that Richie did a fine job of telling us about her world. Her writing is engaging and I have to say that I even fell in love with the book cover. There is absolutely nothing to dislike about this thoroughly entertaining novel.

A Great Book!!!,

This review is from: Priceless: A Novel (Hardcover)
After reading Ms.Richie's last book, I have to admit, I was expecting this to be a sequel to "Diamonds", but after reading "Priceless", I am glad she wrote this instead. It was excellent from start to finish, I had a hard time putting it down. The reason I enjoy Ms. Richie's books is with each page, I feel as if I am watching the movie version as I read. This story expresses very well how a person can have everything and nothing at the same time, and just because you were raised to be one way, doesn't mean that you can't change. Ms. Richie has a gift for storytelling, and I look forward to her next book whenever she releases it.

Priceless,

Charlotte Williams is a typical New York socialite, enjoying the finer things in life and being the apple of her father's eye. But when darling daddy is taken to federal prison on embezzlement charges, Charlotte's charmed life is suddenly in ruins. Cheated investors are after her, and even her household staff was duped by her father and questioning her about their money. Charlotte flees New York and finds comfort in the only person that can provide it for her-Miss Millie, the woman who helped raise Charlotte after her mother passed away. Charlotte tries to settle into her temporary life in New Orleans-making a new friend in the fashionista Kat, securing a job as a waitress, and possibly finding romance with Millie's son, Jackson. But a stalker that set up an unpleasant website about Charlotte is not letting her find peace. He is determined to bring her down because of her father's actions, and the threats are soon out of control.Priceless is the follow-up novel from Nicole Richie after The Truth About Diamonds. This novel seemed more fiction to me than the first, where I was able to see parallels from those characters to Richie's celebrity life. With Priceless, I was much more invested in the story and Charlotte's troubles, even though I'm sure Richie relied on her socialite experience for some of the scenes. But casting the celebrity bit aside, I thought this novel was a fast read that entertained me throughout. The characters were well-written and made relatable, even though I am far from that social status. I thought Charlotte was very likeable, even though her character could have gone the other way, so I was really rooting for her throughout the whole story. More books like this from Nicole Richie will definitely not be a bad thing. |
