No hype, THE best mma game ever!, April 29, 2003
This review is from: Pride FC (Video Game)
Pride FC for the PS2 is the most realistic mixed martial arts game ever made. What makes it stand out from the competition (UFC Tapout 2) is the numerous reversals and counters available to the fighters. The animation is life-like and fluid. Each fighter accurately represents their real-life counterparts, and their moves are truly unique from each other. Given, they all share the basic moves and controls for applying submissions or going for the takedowns. They also have custom combos that are simple enough to remember. But what makes Pride FC unique is that the animations of the techniques used by the fighters differ from each other. Igor Vovchanchyn's left hook will not look like Guy Mezger's. This is a highly strategic game that can be fun for both beginners, and extremely challenging for skilled players. This game will not work for button-mashers. Each fighter has different strengths and weaknesses, and it is up to you to exploit them. The create-a-fighter feature is also one of the best I've seen, and is certainly better than UFC Tapout 2's. You can create custom combos, punch for punch, kick for kick, choke for choke. Also new to the game are two new fighting positions which include the standing clinch and the stand & down position in which one fighter scoots around on his behind on the ground as the other fighter stands over him, and both are able to deliver strikes/holds from either position. One of the coolest things that I appreciate is that if you time an opponent's attack perfectly, you can counter with a punch or a kick that can end the fight instantly, regardless of how much health the other guy has. This feels like a real fight, and each bout feels like a tug of war. This is a must for TRUE mma fans, but not the arcade fans.

It's difficult to give longevity to any game of this type, and making it impossibly difficult is a turn off also. The balance here is pretty cool, most of the World's top fighters are here for you to use and play around with, with a mixture of fighting styles, and moves. The graphics engine is tight, and amongst the most realistic out there, even if the blood splattering on the canvas and the camera lens doesn't always tie up. The "create a fighter" is fun, and involving, and although the actual fight controls are complex, they aren't ridiculous as in some other games.
On the plus side, this game has good playability and the experimentation with different set moves, clothes, styles, and a myriad of moves keep you interested. On the negative side the "easy" level is too easy, and the normal and pro levels take time and patience, thankfully there is a continue option when you get beaten. There is lots of potential for two player and multi player options, but the opening entrance sequences and pre fight garb get tedious after a few watches. Overall not the best martial arts fight game out there, but not too complex to operate, and great graphics make it a bargain title for the PS2. More die hard fans should check out the new "Rocky" for pure boxing, otherwise this is a good night in laugh. Enjoy!

Awesome, February 25, 2003
This review is from: Pride FC (Video Game)
This blows UFC Tapout out of the water. For the reviewer who complained about the AI being inconsistent its because the creators made the fighters the way they are: good fighters are good and bad fighters are weak. If you're not a fan of MMA (mixed martial arts) you should know that most of the moves that the fighters do are moves they actually do in the ring. So if a fighter is huge puncher he can knock you out with one clean punch regardless of your health or stamina, or you can be submitted regardless of your health or stamina. They went out of their way to make this as realistic as possible. The feature that takes the cake on this game though is the "Create a Fighter" mode; its unreal and the best I have seen for any fighting game. There are a ton of faces and physical characteristics to choose from (most of the are faces of other fighters that didn't make the game) and a ton of moves to choose from. You can choose a unique move for every position available, it can be a little labor intensive if you want it to be. You can also choose your entrance music, the stance of your fighter, the way he walks when called by the ring announcer, the way he walks to the ring, and the way he celebrates after winning. You can see all of this in "Grand Prix" mode (tournament). If you like fighting type games this is one of the best.
