5.0 out of 5 stars 5 stars for the ammount of fights and signifigance of this event!
This is PRIDE's legendary 2000 Open Weight Grand Prix tournament. 16 of the worlds top fighters would enter and only one would come out on top. 2.0 out of 5 stars Pride FC rules, but this tournament is a BORE.
I love Pride FC and never miss an event. Pride FC mma is the BEST but unfortunately this dvd is a bore. Just about all of the matches are not worth watching a second time. The only bout on this dvd worth watching is the classic Sakuraba vs Royce Gracie 90 min bout.

This is PRIDE's legendary 2000 Open Weight Grand Prix tournament. 16 of the worlds top fighters would enter and only one would come out on top. For this epic super tournmanet, PRIDE had gathered an impressive resume of fighters from all over the world and representing all different styles including Ukranian kickboxer Igor Vovchanchyn, American wrestlers Mark Coleman and Mark Kerr, Legendary Japanese pro wrestler and MMA legend Kazushi Sakuraba, Antoni Inoki's protoge' Kazuyuki Fujita, Former king of Pancrase Guy Mezger, Big Daddy Gary Goodridge, and the return of the very first UFC champion Royce Gracie. This was meant to be the super tournament to find out once and for all who the top fighters were. Naturally since it was an open weight tournament, the larger fighters were presumed to win so a certain rule set was crafted to insure the fairest possible fights. Unfortanetley these rules differ from normal PRIDE rules and offer some slower paced action. This 3 disc set contains the whole tournament, held over the course of two shows with something like 18 total fights. Not all of them are incredibly exciting unfortunately but we get to see some classics like Sakuraba vs. Mezger, The 90 minute classic(or snoozefest based on your POV) between Sakuraba and Royce Gracie, Igor Vovchanchyn vs. Sakuraba, Igor vs. Goodridge, Kerr vs. Fujita, Ken Shamrock vs. Alex Otsuka(probably Ken's best performance to date), and a lot more including an early Wanderlei Silva fight. Any true MMA fan will love this event and you've got plenty to watch here. For me it was well worth the money. I remember reading about this event online back when it occured and seeing all of these old UFC fighters in it. For years I wondered what it was as it looked like an incredible tournament. Well here's the whole thing for all those curious. For the price, I don't think you can beat it. The only negative is that some of the fights are a little boring, but I'd say an equal number are very exciting and entertaining. If you're a longtime fan or follower of MMA, there's no way you won't be happy with it. More casual fans who just like to see only vicious knockouts and brawls(though it's got some) probably won't like it.

4.0 out of 5 stars This DVD is really good! But its outdated!!, February 28, 2007

There are some good fights in here, specially if you are a Gracie fan. There are three disks and one of these is pretty much the long and tired fight of Gracie vs Sakuraba which lasts like 2 hours!! Over all there are some pretty exiting moments here and there, specially having Igor Vovchanchyn and Mark Coleman in this tournament.
If this is your first PRIDE FC purchase - go for more recent material - like Final Conflict - or the Bushido 2006 DVDs. IF you are a martial arts fan - then this complete tourney - is a must!

If you just want blood and gore, you might want to look elsewhere. But if you're a true MMA fan, this is a great buy, especially for under $10.

We will never see an event like this again. Open weight class tournaments in MMA are not going to happen, especially with the UFC. So the significance of the event alone warrants the purchase of this DVD.

If for no other reason, buy it for the Royce Gracie v. Sakuraba match. Maybe the greatest match in the history of MMA, after the original Gracie v. Kimura match (which you can't get on DVD because it wasn't recorded).

5.0 out of 5 stars The best of the Pride events, October 13, 2011
This review is from: Pride Fighting Championships: 2000 GP (DVD)
In my opinion, Pride Fighting Championships was the best MMA production, had the best MMA fighters at the time, and each and every event was a spectacular. This one takes the cake on spectacular. To gain a better insight into this event, you should also watch "The Smashing Machine."

4.0 out of 5 stars Good set, but not for the money, July 11, 2010
This review is from: Pride Fighting Championships: 2000 GP (DVD)
As a hardcore MMA fan, PRIDE always put on a good show. This pair of events is definitely a good set for those who want a good history lesson on PRIDE or just a good set of fights. However, I will warn you of some things. The Sakuraba/Gracie fight, the first on disc 2, is 90 minutes long. It's not extremely horrible to watch, but it goes over its bearability limit around the hour mark. In all honesty, MMA fights should not last longer than the 30 that the PRIDE fights used to go to. Believe me, watching one 90 minute fight is much different than watching six full fights at a UFC or Bushido event! Another thing: the final three fights of the tournament, as well as a pair of superfights with Maasaki Satake/Guy Mezger & Ken Shamrock/Alex Otsuka, are on the Special Features disc. This may be due to the length of the aforementioned 90 minute war, but for a guy like me who buys DVDs for the fights, not the special features, this gets pretty annoying. I was looking forward to only having to use 2 discs for this set. It's a good set of cards, but not for the $44.95 Amazon wants you to pay.

5.0 out of 5 stars classic tournament, May 2, 2010

This review is from: Pride Fighting Championships: 2000 GP (DVD)
This is a classic tournament and could be described as the last battle of the old school. The fact that most of the fighters in the tournament with the exeption of sakuraba, fujita and mezger were 1 dimensional fighters specializing in either stand-up or ground fighting. if ur a fan of mma i would suggest this tournament or would like to see why mark coleman is still fighting at age 40 something. all of prides best stars are in the tournament Sakuraba, Fujita, Takada, K. Shamrock, Mezger, Royce Gracie, a young Wanderlei Silva, Vovchanchyn, Kerr, Coleman and big daddy Goodridge.

4.0 out of 5 stars Classic Fights., May 29, 2009
This review is from: Pride Fighting Championships: 2000 GP (DVD)
Hey, I picked this up cheap, wasn't expecting much. I was happy to be proven wrong, some of the fights are slower paced, but vintage Mark Coleman, and the return of Ken Shamrock on the 3rd disc is worth it by itself. There is also two excellent fights of Guy Metzger and the 90 minute showdown with Royce Gracie and Sakuraba. Overall, I would recommend this to any fight fan. (But,as much as I love amazon, I found it at kmart for 7.99)
