Flirtin' with perfection,

This review is from: Pride & Glory (With Bonus CD) (Audio CD)
Pride & glory is THE best album of the last two decades. No, seriously, who would have though there was still such great musicians willing to release such a powerful and inspired album without having to display their technic! Unlike satriani or Vai who just release clinical and almost only for pro's Cd's, Zakk proves he can go beyond that. This is about Fun, real guts, (hard)rock, a touch of country and a lot of emotion. ZAKK is a very honest musician, he is the most talented guitar player of his generation-not to mention his piano skills and rough vocals. Each song on this album is piece of art! This album smells:sweat, beer, country-side and sometimes tears. I believe that what makes it even better, is that Zakk doesn't have to prove anything to anybody, so he just plays and it feels good! In additon to all that magnificence, a bonus cd where Zakk and his friends cover some of the best bands. And again it is great-cheek out Zeppelin's Time Of Dying. Not to mention the amazing drum-work of Brian Tichi(did I spell it right?). Did you know that when this album came out, Zakk came to Brussels, he played for almost 2 hours in a local CD store and then went to the concert hall and played for 3 hours!

Ronnie Van Zant Would Be Proud!,

This album isn't for the "Johnny come lately" pimple faced Black Label Society fans that have given this album mediocre reviews. This is Zakk at his finest. Pride & Glory shows the incredible writing talent of Zakk Wylde. I love BLS too, but wish he would have pursued the southern rock thing a bit longer. This is a must have for any southern rock lover or Zakk fan. Lighten up headbangers and enjoy the multi-faceted talent of Zakk Wylde! He's a one of a kind true artist!

The Best of Zakk Wylde,
By Jarra Dan (UK) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Pride & Glory (With Bonus CD) (Audio CD)
Thats right folks, forget the mindless shread feast that is BLS, this album truely is the best of Zakk Wylde. I've been listening to it since it was first released, and it's still one of my favourite albums. This is truely what Zakk does best, and I've been waiting for a follow up since. Horse Called War, Toin' the Line and Losin' your Mind - southern/hard rock classics. Fading Away, Torn and Tattered - country rock ballad perfection, Hate Your Guts and Hammer and the Nail - comedy genius, and three of the best cover versions I've ever heard on the bonus disc. BLS super fans don't bother, you don't have the taste. Anyone else whose thinking about it buy it now!

Up to this 1994 release, Zakk Wylde had recorded two albuns with Ozzy: NO REST FOR THE WICKED and the great NO MORE TEARS. PRIDE & GLORY is an almost total departure from his previous work with the Master, which came as a complete surprise. Few people had any doubts about Zakk's skill with his guitar, but no one could have guessed that his writing skills could be so fine!!! This CD shines in each of its 74 minutes and 14 tracks. The production is outsdanding; Zakk's vocals are unique, totally personal. Song selection is amazing, mixing country, rock, ballads, staight-ahead metal, the whole arsenal of rock!! A great, great album!!

SAGA STARTS HERE,
This review is from: Pride & Glory (With Bonus CD) (Audio CD)
Let me start by saying that Zakk at Black Label Society is musically distinct from him at Pride and Glory. There are two groups of his fans around; on the one had there is a fan who have followed him since the Ozzy days, hence since the birth of Pride & Glory; on the other hand there is a fan who starts following him from his Black Label Society outputs. The expectation toward his works should be definitely different between these two groups. The former tends to be reminiscent of his magnificent song-writings at this "Pride & Glory" album, which I believe was served as a solid foundation of his roots of music consisting everything from Rock N' Roll, Metal, to Country and Southern Rock. This diversity in genre was what makes Zakk Wylde to be among world legendary songwriters.
What mostly differs "Pride & Glory" from his recent works is that this album offers a body of great melodies, which leave listeners no choice but humming along ("Shine On" "Lovin Women" and "Troubled Wine"). Also, I particularly like his style of singing at this album, which is bit different from "Book of Shadows" and Black Label Society. The way he expresses his words is extremely unique here in a very good way. What is good in this album is that he manages excellently well to manipulate his range of both high and low pitch at a same verse. Even at some aggressive tunes, one can clearly hear the vocal lines. Note that his high tone in this album is conceptually different from what I consider it be to high at the recent songs like "Say What You Will", in which I sometimes tend to parallel his with Ozzy's vox. Some who recently question his singing abilities need to listen the following two songs; "Sweet Jesus" and "Found A Friend." These songs are enough to demonstrate that he can not only sing very professionally, but also can write the greatest ballads as beautiful as "Home Sweet Home" or "Love Bites." (sorry for the poor comparisons, but cannot come up with good ballads) For those who want tunes as hard as Black Label Society, "Toe'n the Line" is a good candidate. For those who want some Skynard, you can go no wrong with songs like "Lovin' Women" or "Cry Me a River." In the end, "Pride and Glory" contains the most diversified approaches done by Zakk Wylde ,and I cannot ever be bored with this masterpiece for certain. Again, depending crucially upon where you started being interested in Zakk's music, how you evaluate "Pride & Glory" is varied. If you are into him through Black Label Society, this album seems at first being a large mystery, but I promise that it will grow on you and eventually become among the heaviest rotation of your Itunes or CD players. As other reviews state, "Pride and Glory" is one of the decent albums came out in the last decade, and with a bonus CD including 5 more songs, this CD keeps strong and never get old. Finally, I sincerely hope that Zakk would take times to write songs and release the sophomore CD for Pride and Glory as a band. Saga started right here 1994!!!

One of the most incredible albums ever. From beginning to end. This album ranks up there with some of the best ever written or composed. The songwritng is emotional and the music is brilliant. I cant say enough good things about this one. Zakk Wylde is the most under-rated musician over the past decade or so.

Pure southern Rock & Roll with the perfect metal edge!,

As a long-time fan of Zakk's it's hard to say anything bad about his music... he rocked with Ozzy but he really came into his own once Ozzy retired. His melodies, lyrics, and instrumental background all combine into an amazingly emotional, (and usually a foot-stomping/head-banging frenzy) of musical perfection. The solos are fast and furious (but always just right) and it's amazing how he can hit all them notes playing at that speed! Most lead guitarists (myself included) tend to have a very poor voice but Zakk's is strong and as good as any vocalist out there. Pride and Glory is a must-get for any serious music lover!

A very Wylde tribute to Heavy Southern music...,
By Nico (Venezuela) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Pride & Glory (With Bonus CD) (Audio CD)
This album Pride & Glory isn't only one of my 3 All-Time favorite Cd's....it's much more. As a guitar player I criticize a lot of guitar players, but Zakk has definatelly left me with too many good things to say. If we analize Zakk's style in guitar playin', it is way beyond good....comin' back on the Osbourne Institute of Rock. His singing isn't BAD AT ALL...he is not Freddie Mercury either but he has a very characterized style of singing like for example in "Cry Me A River" (which is a song that completely shows us his influence on southern music). The first song "Loosing Your Mind" has a perfect intro which basically tells you in 24 seconds how the rest of the CD will be like. If you like the first song, then you'll like the rest of it. He also puts a little humor on songs like "Hate your Guts" in which you will completely break down to tears of laugh In the Bonus CD, there is a great version of Black Sabbath's "The Wizard" (even though it could never be as good as Sabbath's) and a really cool version of "Come Together". Pride & Glory has had a big influence on my music style and the trio playing shows a lot of feeling on what they're doing, and that's what really matters. What would you choose....a someone who can play a thousand notes in a second without feeling, or someone who can give you three or four chords with all his enthusiasm? (Hey, Zakk can also play his extremely fast licks...this is not a 'three or four chords' album)!

yes it's Zakk. yes it's a masterpiece. why? well, where does one start? Zakk Wylde decided that his Ozzy Days weren't really what he was about. undoubtedly he owes his rock and roll life to the Ozzman, but he felt there was something more to share with the world. this is what he put forth. a true master work from a man who may be the rock and roll high priest of our generation. everthing that is great about rock is found within: blues, country, a little bit of soulful harmony and good old fashioned heavy metal will grace your eardrums on this gem. why try to describe each tune, when you can let the music do the talking. i bought this baby the day it was released, and have never had a single week go by when i didn't hear a track from it, be it from a mix cd, or the cd itself. do yourself a huge favor and pick it up while you're on here. too much talk can spoil the surprise. just trust me and spin it for yourself. peace.
