5.0 out of 5 stars Integrity and joy
I very much enjoyed PRIDE for what it had to say about friendship, and for how Lorene Cary interwove four women's lives -- four different women -- while maintaining the integrity of their voices. I felt PRIDE was reality-based, as opposed to playing into commercial ideas of friendship. It is, in a sense, anti-sit-com. I love Cary's resilence to the obvious, and to this...

2.0 out of 5 stars OK
The characters were interesting but the plot was boring. I enjoyed their friendships and their bonds. However, too much time was spent on the past. While explaining each character's past was informative, too much time was spent revisiting and I found myself bored. I also thought that Roz and Tam's conflict should have been explored more. I was disappointed that the...

The characters were interesting but the plot was boring. I enjoyed their friendships and their bonds. However, too much time was spent on the past. While explaining each character's past was informative, too much time was spent revisiting and I found myself bored. I also thought that Roz and Tam's conflict should have been explored more. I was disappointed that the author did not explore how Roz dealt with Hiriam and his infidelity. What, their life went on without any discussion about his affair with one of her best friends. I doubt it. I would not recommend this book.

2.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing after Black Ice, October 19, 2000
This review is from: Pride (Paperback)
I'm not going to be quite as harsh as many others who trashed this book. I loved Black Ice, so I started this book with a much more positive attitude. One of its problems is that it does't know if it's a tragedy, a comedy, or a statement of the human condition. The opening chapter aims at humor at the wedding, but then there are wrenching scenes like Nikki's abortion and the affair between Tam and Hiram. The book needed much better editing, a livlier story line and better writing. Though the characters are interesting, the writing is flat and ponderous and it really does drag on. I read for a few hours and was dismayed to see that I was only on page 70. I barely made it to the end, and only because I don't like to leave any book unfinished. I think publishers should be more careful when preparing second books. Just because Black Ice was good doesn't mean this one should have made it without chopping. Terry McMillian does this kind of writing about a hundred times better. This book made me want to reread Waiting to Exhale. Cary could take a lesson from McMillian's sense of humor and stronger writing. That being said, there's still hope for Cary if she tightens up the plot, provides clear clues to the narrator and finds a good editor. I'm not writing her off yet.

1.0 out of 5 stars Bad Plot, August 25, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Pride (Paperback)
I finished the book unsatisfied. The character development was complicated, unfinished, and boring. The storyline(s) were so hard to follow. And why would you give one character two or three nicknames (Arnethea), I could never tell who they were talking about or talking to. Pure disappointment!

I read the first three chapters of this book....I'm returning it to the bookstore tommorrow! Too boring and too much about politics! This will be an unfinished story in my life! HORRIBLE

2.0 out of 5 stars Hard Book to Follow, April 17, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Pride: A Novel (Paperback)
This book never did come together for me. It was hard to get to know the characters because they were so underdeveloped and left a lot of unanswered questions. Like what happen to Hiram & Roz after she found out about his longtime affair? Also, because of the way the book was written, it was hard to follow who was talking. I would read a couple of paragraphs and then have to go back and try to figure out who was talking. It was tough finishing this one!

2.0 out of 5 stars COULN'T FINISH IT, April 7, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Pride: A Novel (Paperback)
I thought this would be a great book, but I was mistaken. It has been sitting on my shelf for over 2 months, with the book mark in the same page. This is the first and last time, I will ever buy a book written by Lorene Cary.

1.0 out of 5 stars Confusing, January 4, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Pride (Paperback)
This story-line was very confusing. No one character was developed, the dialogue between characters was strained. There were a lot of pertinet parts of the story that should have been expounded on, but instead were just dropped on the reader like a dead weight only to move very quickly to another topic.

2.0 out of 5 stars nothing outstanding, September 27, 1998

Although I read this book in one sitting, I was very disappointed in how the book flowed and the ending. I kept expecting more. Each chapter was devoted to one of the four main characters with the final chapter devoted to Audrey, who I felt was the least established character in the book. The bookcover was breathtaking and caught my eye, but this is one author who will have to work very hard on the second book if she expects me to become a repeat purchaser as well as recommend her to other readers.

1.0 out of 5 stars a disappointment, September 3, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Pride (Paperback)
When i saw the colorful images on the cover of the book, i knew i had to read Pride. Unfortunately, once i started it i realized that although the cover was bright, the content was extremely bland. the plot was interesting enough, Cary just had a difficult time making it come alive. I got close to the end, put it down for some reason and never bothered to pick it up again.

2.0 out of 5 stars LESS IS MORE, August 7, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Pride (Paperback)
While there were some interesting people in this book, I was like the reader from Ohio. I couldn't get past chapter two and haven't picked it up since.

There were some interesting people in those first two chapters and some of the incites were original and funny, but I had trouble keeping up with who and what and gave up the ghost. A stronger focus was needed and I hope she does it for her next one. She is a good writer, but her storyline needs to be more fine tuned.
