Finally, a "White Hat" who gets it...they are a rare breed. Chief Lasky's book illustrates why being a firefighter is the best career in the world. He is forward thinking, but established in a foundation of old school values which gives him direction. All this is found in his book. This is an easy read, but a very complex subject. If you are on the 'Job', this is a must read - over and over again. Fall in love with the job all over - and be proud of what you do!

After hearing a podcast on this book on [...] I decided that I should pick up a copy and see what the hub-bub was all about. This book exceeded most of my expectations. Chief Lasky took it upon himself to address many of the issues that are now plaguing the fire service. He writes on the lost traditions, what it means to be a firefighter, a Company Officer and even a Chief Officer. He also tells the reader about some of the programs his fire department does to increase interaction with the public and how it improves the relationship between the fire department and the public/elected officials.

This book should be a mandatory read for every firefighter on the job BEFORE they get promoted to a Company Officer position. The only reason I do not give it five stars is because Lasky lives to be a little repetitive and some grammatical errors. However, this book has brought me back into focus on why I am a firefighter and what I need to remember as I continue along my career in the fire service.

This book came HIGHLY recommended by many people on a particular, popular firefighting forum on the net. Being a new firefighter myself, I was hoping to read ALOT about the history of firefighting, how "it is" on the job & maybe even a little bit of entry-firefighting skills & techniques. Although the beginning of the book was very interesting & DID talk a little about the rich history of the fire department, I found the book to get somewhat boring about halfway through to the end. I found myself VERY interested in the beginning & VERY eager just to finish it towards the end. All in all it's a good book, but it just didn't live up to it's "hype" that I expected it to. I also would have liked to have read a longer book itself instead of the actual book ending at 194 pages then turning into over 100 pages of appendixes & forms that most of it's readers will never use & weren't buying the book for in the first place. In the end, on a scale from 1 to 10 I give this book a solid 6 & an overall grade of a C+. Good read, but I'm sure there's better.

I had the opportunity to attend a seminar by the author which prompted me to buy the book. This contains much of what was in the seminar and has really inspired me to reach for the next level of pride and professionalism in my career as a firefighter. This is a must have for anyone serious about the fire service. Extremely helpful ideas on how to make the most of the greatest job in the world!

This is a great book to read to get back to the basics. It answers a lot of the problem that exist in todays fire service. The history lesson in the first three chapters should be given to every new firefighter. This book is a great guide for the volunteer or paid department. Alot can be learned from this easy read.

This is one of the best books I have ever read. Chief Lasky brings it back to the basic's of why we do what we do and to remind us to set the example. Have pride in our department, ourselves, and our communitiy. This book should be a must read for everyone in the brotherhood. Espescially new recruits.

This is outstanding work. If you are looking to transform your department into one that is full of pride and ownership, look no further. If you ever have a chance to see Rick Lasky speak, I highly reccomend it. He is an incredible speaker as well as author.
