5.0 out of 5 stars He's not a MUTT !
Finally, a "White Hat" who gets it...they are a rare breed. Chief Lasky's book illustrates why being a firefighter is the best career in the world. He is forward thinking, but established in a foundation of old school values which gives him direction. All this is found in his book. This is an easy read, but a very complex subject. Outstanding book by Chief Lasky... gets to the heart of why we as firefighters do what we do. Serves as a reminder for the service as a whole to hold onto our core values which is what distinguishes our profession from so many others out there. An outstanding read, should be essential material on promotional reading lists if it isn't already!

5.0 out of 5 stars The way it is., July 18, 2009
This review is from: Pride & Ownership: A Firefighter's Love of the Job (Hardcover)
Chief Lasky tells us what each of us was thinking. As a firefighter, we love what we do and why we do our job. This book is the kind of book you read through in a couple of days and learn from for a couple of lifetimes. Anyone who has a lackluster attitude needs to read this and realize that there is more to the service than just showing to work on time and going home when its your turn. Remembering that this is a family is the number one point that comes across in this book. Thanks Chief Lasky!

This is one of the best books for the fire service. I have seen real and lasting change in some of our officers that took the time to read this. It should be mandatory reading for everyone.

4.0 out of 5 stars Exceeds Expectations, February 15, 2009
By
This review is from: Pride & Ownership: A Firefighter's Love of the Job (Hardcover)
After hearing a podcast on this book on [...] I decided that I should pick up a copy and see what the hub-bub was all about. This book exceeded most of my expectations. Chief Lasky took it upon himself to address many of the issues that are now plaguing the fire service. He writes on the lost traditions, what it means to be a firefighter, a Company Officer and even a Chief Officer. He also tells the reader about some of the programs his fire department does to increase interaction with the public and how it improves the relationship between the fire department and the public/elected officials.

This book should be a mandatory read for every firefighter on the job BEFORE they get promoted to a Company Officer position. The only reason I do not give it five stars is because Lasky lives to be a little repetitive and some grammatical errors. However, this book has brought me back into focus on why I am a firefighter and what I need to remember as I continue along my career in the fire service.
